Valve are again spreading the joy to developers with free games, this time the Ubuntu developers are now eligible to get free Valve games!
I must say this impresses me, I wonder if in future they will extend this to any other distributions or if they will keep it to the main two that got them going?

I am not quite sure what Ubuntu developers did to deserve this more than let's say Fedora or Gentoo developers? SteamOS is NOT based on Ubuntu after all.

Ubuntu more than any other Distro put Linux into the hands of a lot more "average Joe's" than Gentoo. Hell Ubuntu is really what got me to stick with Linux and is why this website is even here in the first place.
Gentoo have never been here to make things easy for people, I don't personally feel that they deserve it at all.

Don't get me wrong. I am not advocating Gentoo here. I have personally never used it, nor did I feel the need to. It was just an example of somebody else who do contribute to Linux world.
I do agree that Ubuntu did a huge job in marketing Linux, and making it user friendly. But it is also true that it was only possible because of the insane amount of work put in by others. And I mean things like udev (and devfs before it), dpkg and apt-get, multiarch support, systemd. None of that came from Ubuntu.
Therefore I think that giving Ubuntu developers a privilege is kind of arbitrary when you consider the amount of work done by others. At least with Debian it made more sense, because Valve directly depends on the work of Debian developers. Sort of like Ubuntu does too...

Gift giving and charity in general are typically arbitrary or at the very least rather narrowly focused. One does need to look at such gestures in the thin context in which they are given.
I do however think ranking distributions based on whether they "deserve" something, as has happened in this thread, is a very sinister precedent indeed. :|

It makes sense since Ubuntu was the targeted desktop OS by Valve. The more that games improve for Ubuntu and Debian the more Valve benefits.
