The news just keeps flowing, it now looks like XCOM: Enemy Unknown is closing in on a Linux release.

The Linux history on the SteamDB entry for XCOM: Enemy Unknown is filling up with more Linux related changes, the most recent is this one:
Quote11 minutes ago Changed App Config
launch/2/executable: binaries/linux/game.x86_64 › binaries/linux/xcom.sh
launch/3/description: XCOM Enemy Within › Play XCOM Enemy Within
launch/3/executable: xew/binaries/linux/game.x86_64 › xew/binaries/linux/xcom_ew.sh

Before that was this as well:
Quoteabout 2 hours ago Changed App Config
launch/2/arguments: -arch=i386 › -arch=x86_64
launch/2/config/osarch: 32 › 64
launch/2/description: Linux 32bit › XCOM Enemy Unknown
launch/2/executable: xcom.sh › binaries/linux/game.x86_64
launch/3/description: Linux 64bit › XCOM Enemy Within
launch/3/executable: xcom.sh › xew/binaries/linux/game.x86_64

Of course SteamDB is not confirmation of anything, but it's always good supporting evidence.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a remake of one of the best games ever made which shares a similar name. It is your job to fend off the alien menace in turn based combat with base building included as standard.

So, do you think it will drop soon? I sure hope so as it's highly rated and looks seriously fun. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

By the "xcom_ew.sh" I'm assuming that this means the Enemy Within expansion will be available too. I've been holding off on picking that up till they finish this port.

I would be shocked if they didn't bring the expansion as well, would seem a bit odd to go through the effort to port the base game and not EW.

Not just the "ew" in the script name, but the descriptions clearly say "Enemy Within".

I literally just spat the hookah hose out of my mouth to shout "YES! FINALLY!" My dog kinda looked at me funny, but to hell with her. Daddy's gonna be messing up some aliens.

I bought this one a while back when it went on sale, and have been waiting for the Linux release in order to play it. It seems 2K shall not disappoint. Now, if only Civ V would start getting Linux bits in the depot.

I've been habitually checking their steamdb since December, yet this somehow slipped past me :p Regardless, can't wait to play.

Objection! It was called UFO: Enemy Unknown on the Amiga, and that version of the game was definitive. :P

I'm looking forward to this. I completed it on Windows when it first came out, and it was good fun. It's nowhere near as tactical or interactive as the original games -- base building is very cut down, you only get one, and your facilities and research are severely cut down; ship to craft battles are optional, and rely on you building boosters ahead of time; and ground missions are very formulaic, and there's much less reliance on luck.

Still, like I said, it was good fun. I'll certainly be playing it all the way through again + the DLC when it comes to Linux.

I remember reading a fantastic retrospective from the guys who created the original game. (I can't for the life of me find it on google though.) It was an great look into what game development was like, and how that mirrors a lot of what indie gamer developers experience now.

I love XCOM, and it is definately one of my gaming shames (haha) that I never played the original. The new game is truely brilliant though, a throwback in a lot of ways, but also remake that can stand on it's own. For anyone who hasn't played it, don't miss your opportunity now that it is imminent on Linux. You won't regret it.
