i have played every serious sam game all the way through co-op, really enjoy them. Serious Sam 3 was the best game when steam for linux first came out. Very excited about a new one. I hope its not in the desert again, I enjoy the tropical setting of the first games more.

Actually, the very first Serious Sam game was set in the dessert...
Not that I personally ever really got into any of the Serious Sam games. People say they bring back the classic Doom formula, but there is a lot more to Doom than just shooting lots of dumb enemies in vast but still surprisingly linear courtyards.
It probably is more fun as a co-op game though, and my only experience with them is admittedly only with some of the older ports that were never properly polished.

I remember the first desert one I just meant there were two tropical ones that I liked more. And yes doom is a better game and I think duke 3d was better as well but this game is great for beer and LAN parties.i have played every serious sam game all the way through co-op, really enjoy them. The most recent updates to SS3 have killed the frame rate for me, where before I was getting a consistent 30 frames per second I'm now getting between 7 & 12, not impressed at all & I love the Serious Sam games.

I thought I'd go back and check the frame rates as I'd finished this game last summer with a GTX 460.
I'm now on a GTX 660 and the frame rates are definitely higher, up over 100 in some parts but it's not at all smooth and quite glitchy. I certainly remember it being smoother.

That's just bonkers - I'm Arch 64 as well.
I'm not very familiar with Xfce (even though I put it on my wife's laptop!), when you say you killed Compton did you try another WM or just turn off compositing? It might be worth trying Metacity as a test, I know that works fine here too.

And there's me thinking everything favoured Intel CPUs! I've always bought AMD CPUs purely because they've been better value for money (so far anyway - and always ones that aren't the latest, so reduced in price also).
As regards "ondemand" - I have up_threshold at 30 and "performance" is still noticeably zippier on the desktop (at least). Changing the governor is very trivial anyway. I'm running kernel 3.13.6-1-ck at the moment but this shouldn't be a factor.

but at least you can play it :D SS3 Jewel Of The Nile was fun as well.

Wow, didn't expect that. I know ck helps with desktop responsiveness generally but I didn't think it could make much of a difference in this sort of case.

@stan - well I have no idea what's going on with your crazy setup :P but I've just tried the stock kernel from the repos and I got exactly the same frame rates as with -ck, maybe even 2 to 3 fps better.
