Looks like Civilization is getting a reboot and it's called "Civilization: Beyond Earth". The great news is that multiple sources are stating Linux is a platform of choice now for Firaxis.

The scope of the game just sounds massive and it's not set on Earth, it's set on an alien planet.

Sadly we aren't yet big enough to get press-releases for AAA games (Firaxis or 2K if you are watching, sort that out will you!). So, you will have to bear with me on this as it is pieced from other sites.

I have reached out to both 2K and Firaxis for proper confirmation.

It sounds like a true next-gen Civilisation with inspiration from Alpha Centauri too, along with new features like these:
  • Seed the Adventure: Players will establish a cultural identity, select a leader and sponsor an expedition by assembling the spacecraft, cargo and colonists through a series of choices that directly impact starting conditions when arriving on the new alien planet.
  • Alien World: Exploring the benefits and dangers of a new planet filled with dangerous terrain, mystical resources and hostile lifeforms unlike those of Earth, players will build outposts, unearth ancient alien relics, tame new forms of life, develop flourishing cities and establish trade routes to create prosperity for their people.
  • New Technology Web: Reflecting forward progress in an uncertain future, technology advancement will occur through a series of nonlinear choices that affect the development of mankind. The tech web is organized around three broad themes, each with a distinct victory condition.
  • New Quest System: Quests are infused with fiction about the planet, and will help guide players through a series of side missions that will aid in the collection of resources, upgrading units, and advancing through the game.
  • New Orbital Layer: Players will build and deploy advanced military, economic and scientific satellites that provide strategic offensive, defensive and support capabilities from orbit.

Due for this "fall", time to get excited folks.

Sauce: Kotaku.

UPDATE - Luckily 2K games emailed back rather quickly on this one.
QuoteHi Liam,

To answer your question, yes, Civilization: Beyond Earth will release on Linux, as well as Windows PC.

Cheers,
Scott

Now i just wish Borderlands 1 and 2 would come to Linux!
I absolutely concur! Played Borderlands when I was still on Windows. I would love to continue playing it on Linux and eventually start Borderlands 2 as well!

It looks like Aspyr are doing the port. Great news for Linux gaming, they've been great on the Mac side of things.

Can we just get civ 2 with better graphics? Thanks.
TesX 13 Apr 2014
I'm waiting for Civ V for Linux (which I think it will happen together with the launch of the Steam Machines)...

Good work on following this up. I spent a while trying to find a 2K/Firaxis source or press release for this (just in case it was yet another misunderstanding that propagated itself across a whole stack of news sites).

I loved Alpha Centauri, and it seems like the Beyond Earth team are the right people to make a spiritual successor.

Can't wait to pirate this game!
And people wonder why we are seeing so many crappy F2P games these days...
I hope that was a joke.

Can't wait to pirate this game!

I don't think you will see any cracked Linux game any time soon :). And as there aren't any Steam OS exclusive game I thing you will need to wait long before any hacker will start to bother with Linux games

Ah fan sodding tastic!

So happy I could squeal... I might need to clone myself so one half of me can spend 24x7 playing games whilst the other works to support both of us.

Sounds legit :)

As someone who still plays SMAC and AC from GOG, I'm beside myself with anticipation. This is BIG news.

I guess I would now have to buy a computer that will be able to run this :P
Waldir 14 Apr 2014
Loved that confirmation e-mail. This is going on my Steam wishlist as soon as it shows on the map. Any chance you can reply with a "BTW, how's that XCOM port coming?"?. :)

Can't wait to pirate this game!

Really? With games cheaper than food nowadays people still do that?
jdub 16 Apr 2014
Eh, it's a good way to try before you buy...since most devs don't provide a demo. As long as you do buy the game it's ok in my eyes. All those cheaper than food games add up
