It seems the president of Gearbox is looking into how much interest there is for a Linux version of their extremely popular Borderlands series of FPS/RPG games.

This is interesting considering just how popular the games are, I've played them myself before and they are popular for a good reason. The blend of FPS with RPG levelling and randomized weapons works really well. The graphics are also damn good as well.

The news comes from many people emailing this in, it just got buried in my inbox below actual releases.

It seems reddit wants a Linux port of Borderlands 2. I'll probably chat with some folks on twitter about that this weekend.

This isn't anywhere near happening yet though folks as Randy mentioned to a user:

@RoadRunnerdn who said there will be a Linux port - I just want to learn more about customer interests there.

So, he is just looking at how big the market is for a Linux port, can we show him how big it is?

Really cool. Hurray for Coffee Stain Studios and The Farm 51 then.

With GNU/Linux being the most stable platform on Earth, most reliable and robust, is there a reason not to make a native client?

I'm sure they have their reasons, probably the same reason Vita users had to ask as well

Way to make a subjective and unvalidated statement.

If games developers and/or publishers believe it makes financial sense to make native Linux clients then there will be native Linux clients.

Petitions are utterly useless unless you gave a team of people behind them with a lot of time to spare to manage it. It requires constantly reaching out to people, constantly trying to get a dialog with the developer doing etc etc.

People seem to think petitions will accomplish anything, they have obviously never done a successful one before.

You are better of tweet to Randy and posting here, I've sent him the link to this.
This has nothing to do with Linux, but Dark Souls did come to Windows after being exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 due to a petition. Stuff can be accomplished with petitions, it's just rare that the parties they are intended for react to them.

Even though they never fully work, they do have some effect. A Petition is how Namco ended up getting Dark Souls on a the PC, and now Dark Souls is one of the highest selling games on the PC. They're not all together useless.

I would really like to see Borderlands 2 on Linux. If it happens then I will definitely buy it.

I think, that it's more likely, that a petition will bring Dark Souls 2 to linux than Borderlands.

For interested parties, you can see a list of all the games Icculus has ported, or is still currently working on here - https://bugzilla.icculus.org/describecomponents.cgi.

I'm delighted by this news. I sank 70 hours in Borderlands 2 in late 2012 and early 2013, before ditching my Windows partition. That's about the same amount of time I spent on Skyrim during 2011 onwards - one of my biggest time sinks on Steam, apart from my frankly embarrassing 230 hours on Killing Floor.

There's an absolute heap of high quality DLC I could sink my time into if this makes the jump. Great news!

well there's also "Borderlands pre-sequel" being launched soon.

So hopefully we can get linux support for that one and also BL2.

and since these games support MAC from the start, why not linux too.
killx_den 19 Apr 2014
I have it in my playonlinux list but I want it native because switching between windows steam client and linux steam client sucks

How many of you actually contacted Gearbox in some manner to let the folks there know you're interested instead of just commenting here? If you haven't contacted Gearbox yet, then do so!

Liam's referred to this post in his reply to Randy Pitchford. Besides, Randy's agreed to raise it internally already, so the Reddit thread itself was enough.

But you're right. It can't hurt to have your voice heard directly.

Interesting though - here's a massive software house, who publish on Steam, who typically launch their Windows games with Mac compatibility and yet Steam Machines were announced last year, while the Linux client for Steam has been around even longer, over a year.

And the President of this massive, Steam-based software house only now is going to raise it internally?

That's... unbelievable.

Soon as I reddit, I tweeted them. He wanted volume and Ibexpect we should do just that.

Yeah, like valve randomly starts supporting linux. They saw a userbase and its taking a long time for others to see it too. Its a little worrying.

Would love to see Borderlands ported to Linux, as long as they don't just wrap in Wine.
