Natural Selection 2: Combat is interesting because it's a mod that is turning into a full stand-alone game. A mod of a game that once was just a mod of another game itself. Still with me? Good, Natural Selection 2: Combat is being made by Faultline Games not Unknown Worlds and of course has their full blessing.

I have already received confirmation from the developers that it will support Linux:

@gamingonlinux we can't promise it will be ready by release, but definitely want to and will be looking into it.

@gamingonlinux Combat already has penguin love built into its engine and we'll definitely be supporting it with future updates and patches!

Okay, so what the hell is it?! I hear your cries and am here to wipe those tears:

Natural Selection 2: Combat is built using the Spark engine that Natural Selection 2 uses, so it's no surprise it will support Linux, it does mean it will probably need a beefy graphics card though. The game-play is more like a traditional FPS ripping out the commander mode entirely, so every player can run around and shoot.

There aren't many other details on their plans yet, but we will keep you all updated when we can.

I am a big fan of NS2 and Unknown Worlds have supported the game with a lot of updates over time, I hope Faultline Games can deliver and even improve upon the Spark engine. Performance really is an issue with NS2 a lot, so let's wait and see.

THIS, is a good news; since Nuclear Dawn has been abandoned, this Mode can be the only light in the dark for us, Linux Gamers

It can get pretty annoying when you have an incompetent commander or when no one in your team wants to be the commander in Natural Selection, but this feature is what makes NS a unique game. If they remove it then they will end up with an average sci-fi FPS and we have more than enough of those available on linux already.

They aren't removing anything from the base game, so I don't know what you are talking about. The online sci fi FPS selection on linux is mostly ancient games with a sliver of an online community

It is clearly stated they are removing commanders, the game will be very different.

Still, far better than most FPS games on Linux. Not many have two completely different sides, upgrades per-side and beautiful graphics.

and perfromance never been an issue for me on this game.. it always ran 40+ FPS.. most of the time around 60 at max settings.

the problem is with the loading times.. shader caching and what not..
i dont own windows so i dunno how its done there..but they could use GL_ARB_get_program_binary or similar.. or maybe they do

this has no reason to exist while unvanquished still breathes

Yeah sure.

While we are at it Planetary Annihilation shouldn't exist as we have Globulation 2...

What I meant what natural selection 2 will remain unchanged, since this is a seperate game =)
