Something Linux gamers have been requesting time and time again is going to happen! Star Citizen is heading to Linux Chris Roberts stated at a panel at PAX.

They have so far raised a whopping $41 MILLION+ in their own crowdfunding done via their official website. The game is built with CryEngine, so it is no surprise Chris has finally announced the game will support Linux!

The game will come in two "editions" which reading up on it are two separated games. There will be Star Citizen the MMO and Squadron 42 which will be a single-player and drop-in co-op multiplayer game.

The most interesting thing is that Star Citizen will allow for private servers too, that sounds pretty fun.

You can find plenty of videos about the game on their youtube, seems odd to not have many on their actual website.

The game isn't cheap though, the cheapest pack is $30 and if you want alpha/beta access you need to go higher again for $40! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

$40 isnt too bad considering it's a AAA game, most of them go for $60 or more.

Indeed, it's comparable to most big budget games, but compared to most games on Linux it's quite a bit more.

I was waiting for this announcement to buy this game. But also I need to see it running on linux. I won't want to buy a game only with a promise and then have to wait more than a year more than the other (windows) people to play with it. Hope it will be in part with the other os versions.

Star Citizen backer here,
jordicoma, you're not only buying the game, you're helping develop it. Cloud Imperium Games almost exclusively uses the crowd sourcing model, not a publisher, to produce Star Citizen. Investing early will help making sure CIG has enough ressources to make one, if not the, most epic titles with native linux support.

You are missing the point of what I said. I am not saying it is too much. I backed Planetary Annihilation for double that cost just FYI.

I simply stated a fact, it is more expensive than most games Linux gamers are used to paying for. That is not a bad thing, the game looks amazing so far.

By the way, thank you Liam for your great reports. I know there are a lot of Star Citizens reading all of your posts and tweets.
