CaveExpress 2D Platformer Open Sourced

By -

Ice and snow - Desura
CaveExpress is a fun looking 2D physics-based platformer that is now open source under the GPL3.

About
CaveExpress is a classic 2D platformer with physics-based gameplay and dozens of levels. Master your pedal-powered flying machine to pick up packages from your cave-dwelling clients and drop them off at the collection point. But beware! Mighty mastodons, terrifying pterodactyls and others would rather see you extinct. The game source code is also available on GitHub - but of course I would be glad about donations via Desura.

They still sell it as a package on Desura, but since the media is under a CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 license making it free of cost.

Check it out on github now.

Looks like a game that could get pretty good with a few more contributors, I do wonder if anyone buys copies on Desura if the contributors on github would get a cut or if the original developers only get the money? Still it's good to see another developer open up. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

This is a remake/clone of old DOS game named Ugh!

It apparently wasn't as good as the original, so instead of selling it they decided to opensource it.

I installed it when then made it free on Desura, unfortunately the physics were terrible and the game was hardly playable. Ugh! was a great game and I actually played it to the end on Amiga. I'd gladly play it again, or a remake, but not like that.

You can find it somewhere on the web, it is practically abandonware so you can download it and run it on DOSBox. Works like a charm, still decent coop fun after all these years!

The fact that is is open sourced has nothing to do with the "it wasn't successful" - it was a decision from the first line of code. Because I do believe in open source. Everything I code is released under some open source license.

If you don't like aspects of the game, please let me know, I will of course try to improve it. Or if you are able to and willing to, contribute patches to the game. The included map editor even allows you to submit your own maps.

Currently I'm only selling it on Desura to let people be able to more or less donate something if they want. I've written on Desura, that this is not needed and the game is open sourced - so everybody is free to compile it on his own.

@GamingForLinux: Thanks for posting this article - publicity is always good - contributors would be awesome.
