Monochroma, a grim indie platformer (where have we heard that before?), has been released on Steam. The developer, Nowhere Studios, managed to fund the game last year on Kickstarter and Greenlit on Steam. It appears to be set in a dark industrial world with an orwellian vibe. Carried by plot sans dialogue and some great 2.5D visuals, this game definitely looks to have potential.

This game definitely feels familiar, Limbo being the first to mind. Not to mention a bit of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Telsagrad. The steam page promises a "deeply visual, intellectual and emotional experience", so expect an auteur driven experience (mind, on a practical level, this means expect a lot of box pushing in gameplay).

For those wanting to get their bleak on before making purchase, there's a demo on Steam and on their website (gotta love demos!), but keep in mind that this was an early demo from their kickstarter. After playing myself I think this game might be right up my alley, even if I'm a bit underwhelmed so far, but I can respect wanting to perfect an art rather than re-invent it. I'd reccomend checking on the feedback over the next few days (feel free to leave yours under the comments!), and consider waiting for controller support; I personally dislike using the keyboard for platformers.

About the Game (From Steam)
Monochroma offers a deeply visual, intellectual and emotional experience. The game has a unique approach to storytelling without using any written or spoken words. Therefore it requires the player to be actively involved to understand the narrative. The story itself becomes part of the puzzle. Gameplay, visuals and the very limited color palette are used in an expressionist way to help telling the story. The player will find lots of references to other movies, books and games in the dystopian world of Monochroma. The challenge of the game is to make the player think about himself, his role in the society and the system we're living in.

The gameplay, deriving from the story, consists of a boy that has to take care of his younger brother who injures his leg in the beginning of the game. The younger brother is afraid of the dark therefore the player can only put him down under the light to be able to jump higher and move faster but the player can't leave him behind just as in real life.

Monochroma features realistic locations and puzzles blending with the environment. Puzzle designs are far from the arbitrary trial and error gameplay but still challenging. If the players dies the game has a fast checkpoint system that doesn't punish the player.
