As much as I admire Mojang I still can't help but feel let down on Scrolls. They initially sent out tweets to confirm it would get a Linux version, but it's still not here. We find out more.

I purchased a copy on the promise of Linux support. Sadly over a year later this still hasn't happened!

I spoke to Henrik Pettersson who confirmed this to us:

@gamingonlinux As I understand, the new launcher will allow us to make a linux release, but it won't be automatic. So, there's hope, but 1/2

And…

@gamingonlinux 2/2 .. we will finalize windows and mac release first. I guess you're used to that order of things? :-/

Henrik did follow it up with this when I asked if it means it won't happen until the final release for the other platforms:

@gamingonlinux Well, at least not before launcher update, and windows+mac update to go with that.

I know we get a lot of this, but developers thinking we are "used to that order of things" is part of the problem. Mojang have a lot of Linux fans thanks to Minecraft and I feel they are letting us down.

I was able to run Scrolls in wine a couple times, but it seems to not work at-all nowadays and I simply refuse to use Wine now as it's just too much of a hassle for poor performance.

I hope they do deliver on their promise sooner rather than later.

This does bring up an interesting question, if a developer publicly states Linux will have a version and you buy it, should you be entitled to a refund if it never happens? Sadly probably not, but it does serve as a constant reminder to myself to never again buy a game until the Linux version lands, let it be a lesson to you all.

it's a shame that you jumped the gun... I came pretty close; I've been excited for this game for a while.

here's hoping it happens.

I thought we had learned our lesson when it comes to promises of a Linux port? Don't buy it until it's out.

I fully agree. Even a confirmation that the game actually works is becoming necessary lately.
