OpenXcom is still one of my favourite open source engines ever. The original X-COM game UFO: Enemy Unknown/X-COM UFO Defense is one of the best strategy games ever made. The incredible open source engine is finally approaching a 1.0 release.

You can be damned sure I will be doing a video of it once it is released too that's for sure. The original game has an excellent mix of base-building, research and turn-based combat in one neat package and this open source engine allows it to be run on modern operating systems without the original bugs in the game.

You can find the source on github and see just how active it is! You can grab the original Windows/DOS version on Steam or from GamersGate (not used that one myself) and use Wine to grab the data files. The open source engine for it is superior in every way.

Now we just need a proper open source multiplatform engine for Arcanum and I will be happy.

This is why open source rocks guys, reviving old classics from my own childhood is just amazing and I really applaud everyone involved in OpenXcom for sticking at it all the way through!

Also remember the reboot looks close to having a Linux version. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Can't agree more! :)
...but it's hard to not notice that it is a 20 years old game.

Also interesting is that since the last 0.9 version the modding community has been rolling fast with new aliens, weapons and campaigns.

If you want to to take a peek here are a few relevant links:

So even if they're really near to version 1.0 it will hardly stop there :)

Indeed. I've been subscribed the github repo for a while now, and instead of calming down, as you would expect in the lead up to a big release, it seems to be accelerating!

Just look at the commits graph from March onwards: https://github.com/SupSuper/OpenXcom/graphs/commit-activity
