Pandora: First Contact is a science fiction 4X turn-based strategy game on a planetary scale. It is now on Steam & has a huge free contact update. I recently took a look at Pandora with some thoughts and a video as well.
For me it's one of the best indie strategy games I've ever played, it has the charm of Alpha Centauri all over.
You can see the video I did below:

About
Pandora: First Contact is a science fiction 4X turn-based strategy game on a planetary scale.
In the future, factions have risen up from opportunities and ideologies independent of governments. Private corporations and religious movements have started wars over greed, ideology and power. Many have died and many lands lay in ruin. Planet Earth has been exhausted and colonial attempts on other planetary bodies have been in vain.
Finally, after decades of exploration, an interstellar probe has brought promise of a new world many light-years away. The most powerful factions have gathered their best men and women to send on a long journey to Pandora.
Far from desolate, the earth-like planet has been found to host a plethora of indigenous life forms. While the gigantic monstrosities inland and at the oceans seem relatively calm, human-sized bugs and fungus are threatening to stop mankind's expansion.
As the various factions strive to take control, each will research and develop numerous new technologies, discovering new weapons and industry, whilst opening trade agreements and forging alliances with other factions to gain a foothold. As they spread, they will discover ancient ruins from alien civilizations that will grant them advantages over their rivals.
You can grab it from them directly or on Steam. A bit of a warning as it's not cheap, so you may need to save the pennies for it.

If you already own it, you can get a steam key for it as well. Not 100% how.

This is a lot like Alpha Centauri, and as un-Firaxis like as can be. Picking this one up soon!

I bought it on Steam, and have been playing it some the last couple nights. Mixed impressions. So far it's actually a fairly tough game. I miss some Alpha Centauri things, like the social/political system dimension. There is a lot that's very Alpha C-ish.
Some that's different is not so much in concept as in how things play out--like, both have dangerous native life, but in this the dangerous native life multiplies, is at first distinctly tougher than you, and once it starts to notice that you're there it has your address and comes after you. So far I've seriously worried much more about the bloody aliens than I have about my rival factions; they keep wiping my cities out, or killing my new colonists before they can get one started. Plus there's formers just like in Alpha C, but they're almost useless a lot of the time. The way it goes is, you build a former, you send it out to do terrain improvements. It does a few, then aliens come and kill it, then more aliens scrag the mines and farms it made and you're back at square one. Until you can get some military forces badass enough to go wipe the hives off the map, they're a major limiting factor on both expansion and city improvement, and have sometimes threatened to flat wipe out my budding civilization.

You should start not on such an difficult level. I love that this game is not so easy to win the game. But there are ways to win and there is a lot to explore. All in all an awesome game.
If you have Problems to start the game fix the resolution in the config ~/.config/Proxy\ Studios/config :)
