The WWI first person shooter Verdun has been through a fair few changes over its life-cycle, none more appreciated than the new much better UI shown in the video above along with the new map.

I tested it recently and found that even on max settings it was a pleasurable experience for me and quite enjoyable. Surprising as I usually only like modern-day and futuristic shooters. It actually looks pretty good when you crank the settings up too which was a surprise for a lower-budget indie game.

They have planned another major update due this summer before their "full release" which will contain amongst other things more authentic World War 1 characters. That is all that they have hinted at so far for the next big update.

About
The game includes many historically accurate features such as true WW1 weaponry, historical maps based on sectors of the Western Front and authentic characters. The game immerses you both graphically and auditory into one of the bloodiest conflicts fought in Europe.

The true trench warfare offers a unique battlefield for tactical squad play in the Frontlines game mode and rifle Deathmatch. The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity, where players are levelling in different types of squads, each with their own tactics and roles. The realistic trenches create an extra challenge for the players, where teamwork and tactical cunning are essential for success, which is; dominate the trenches in the Western Front!
Features

Features include:
Realistic World War 1 setting - WW1 art, character levelling, weaponry, accurate French and Belgium maps
Tactical squad-based FPS - squad compiling and levelling
True trench warfare - real-time dynamic frontline
WW1 atmosphere - typical WW1 music, the grim level style and an authentic user interface Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I have some weird problems with the game under Linux, though. I need to press escape for the game to start after the loading screen, and sometimes the screen goes black, and I have to press escape to get sight back. Other than that it's a really fun game, not much features right now though.

Yeah, I still have the resolution problem as well. I found that if I change my resolution (to anything from default, since this game doesn't seem to save your settings under 'nix yet), the lock up doesn't happen.

<sigh> .. i want more single player games, sadly this one does not seem to feature a campaign. Though, the game looks amazing.

Problem with a WWI first-person shooter is it would have to be either extremely unrealistic or very boring and depressing.
"Your mission: Charge the enemy lines"
You do. You die in no-man's-land.
Oh well, try again. You die in no-man's-land.
Lather, rinse, repeat. With some cheerful interludes of drowning in mud, trench foot etc.
