GOG.com have announced "Galaxy" a completely optional game client that works a lot like Steam. Not only is it entirely optional but it allows you to be fully offline anytime. They also stated elsewhere it's being built with Linux in mind.

While Linux wasn't mentioned in their video earlier today it will be supported later on when they support Linux on their store later this year. It will support "cross-play" which is online gaming with Steam titles that support it as well. Their Steamworks-like system for things like achievements can be turned off it seems to, it's all optional.

QuoteWe're not forgetting Linux guys. We'll be giving more info later this year.
Galaxy is being done with PC, Mac and Linux in mind.

Really fantastic news to see GOG.com fight to keep things simple for users. Since if you don't want the client you don't have to have it.

Quite exciting to see how well the client works, as Desura still haven't decided what they are doing with their client on Linux since Linden Lab took over.

If they didn't forget Linux during the press conference, then they deliberately avoided it.

I respect GOG for their DRM-free push, but they're far from Linux heroes yet.

Any chance I'll be able to merge my Steam library and GOG library statistics? I'd like to have an aggregated measure of total play times and achievement progress. Such a feature would make me much more inclined to try GOG and the lack thereof makes me avoid games outside Steam even when they are cheaper.

Diversity is always good, and I'm inclined to think GOG will do much better than Desura on this field. And I mean not only the quality of Linux client.

Witcher 3 for Linux!

10€ say it won't be native.

It will support "cross-play" which is online gaming with Steam titles that support it as well.
I am not sure what this means. Is it now a feature to play PC games online with other PC gamers?

Great news! The old client could be made to work on Linux using Wine, but I never managed to make the current client work. (To be fair I have not tried in some time). Any idea of what language/framework they are using?

Let me point you to the GOG-Wiki: http://www.gogwiki.com/wiki/Download_Clients

A lot of games on Steam use steam servers, meaning if you had a drm free version with online you wouldn't be able to play together. This means for GOG cross-play games you will be able to.

50€ say my money will go elsewhere then. I have enough native games to play and support with my money.

Oh, like this title, for example?
Multiplayer notice: The DRM free version of Brutal Legend is single-player only.
Does that mean that once Galaxy hits, this particular title and others like it will finally get online multiplayer?

Well only if developers add it in I guess, not entirely sure how it works right now as they haven't given much info.

Up to them. I won't use any closed client they might make. They said it will be optional anyway. If they'll open it up - I'll think about it.

If eON evolves, it may be something great. Meanwhile, it's pure BS for now. No Witcher 3 pre-order for me before everything gets sorted out.
Shmerl 6 Jun 2014
I won't preorder Witcher 3 either, until Linux version will be confirmed. It won't be playable in Wine either way, since it's using DirectX 11 and I doubt eON supports it as well. So no money from me, until a playable version will be made.
