They promised and they delivered today! Interstellar Marines officially joins the rank of 500+ Linux games now on Steam and it's quite beautiful.

Today marks update #12 for the Early Access FPS game built in the Unity3d game engine and it's quite something.

About the Game
Interstellar Marines resurrects the old school tactical FPS, offering a unique blend of co-op, role-playing and nonlinear gameplay. Set in a believable future, you take on the role as an elite soldier handpicked to join Project IM, a top secret military program being assembled to protect mankind from all dangers outside our solar system.

Interstellar Marines is inspired by Half-Life, System Shock 2 and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Our game is all about evolving the FPS recipe with all the inspirations we've assimilated since the birth of the genre. Our goal is an evolutionary leap forward driven by our compulsive interest in science fiction, role-playing, military realism, and respect for first person immersion.

Here's a game-play video of how well it performs on Linux:

The game is quite beautiful and I loved the map that went from night to day during the game with some massive spotlight, as at night it's quite hard to see and makes you slow down a bit. The performance was reasonable, but not the best at 1920x1080 as it doesn't seem to be well optimized right now and did feel quite sluggish.

Originally when it loaded it sent my mouse to the sky, once I set the right resolution it's now fine.

It doesn't seem to currently save your graphical settings in the UI either, it will apply what you set, but the UI always seem to go back to default values.

Check it out on Steam right now.

I was wondering when you would write an article on this. You're late, it's already been 1h30 since its release :-P

btw, it's cheaper on the humble store right now (at least in euros).

well in my defence the developers were supposed to give me plenty of warning on the release, but I sadly got none. I should be able to get an interview though!

Haha, I don't see any problem. You also had a video to record, for your defense :)

Dude, you should definitely get a cut from Steam/Developer for putting that link there... there's no way I'd be buying this otherwise. Fantastic news.

I'll take the risk on the choppy mouse issue. Other people have reported issues like that before that haven't affected me. Worth a shot, I reckon!

It is Unity 4.5, I'm not 100% this bug is fully fixed as I have also seen it in Verdun after they updated to Unity 4.5. But it it seems to go away once you confirm your resolution to 1920x1080 witch did not fix it before.

Info from the Interstellar Marines Steam forum:

Yep, unplayable. Ah well. Hopefully fixed soon.

It's not like a mouse-lag, either. It's like the mouse constantly freezes hard. I've tried various settings, but no joy. Unplayable.

I'll try the resolution changes.

Damn, I didn't even see that line about 4.5. Shame it works great for Heavy Bullets and Black Ice in regards to mouse handling.

Nope, not only does it not work, but it resets to maximum every time you access the menu! Basically unplayable until that gets fixed. Back to the Witcher 2 for me! Ah well.

Fingers crossed they sort it. It looks absolutely amazing!

It's the same issue I have been experiencing with Rust. The mouse cursor just sticks, and doesn't want to move again, have to do a few little tricks to get it working again. This game looks good, I am going to buy it to support them :)
