Pixel Boy And The Ever Expanding Dungeon was recently released onto Steam. It's a procedural death labyrinth that is simply beautiful and also a little frustrating. The reviews on Steam are good, but is it good on Linux? Here are my thoughts and a game-play video.

Some thoughts
The Linux version so far as I can tell is utterly flawless and runs like silk on my main machine. It even runs just as buttery smooth on my Intel HD4000 laptop, so lower-end user rejoice!

Pixel Boy gives us a good mix of graphical fidelity with interesting game-play that comes to life when you shoot at those poor defence-less creatures of the dungeon. It has the usual game-play of going from floor to floor wiping out creatures as you try to advance to the next floor, but it adds in some interesting mechanics to make it worthwhile.

While you do get the usual money-drops from defeated enemies the armour and weapon systems in Pixel Boy make it something special.

You get to craft some fun weapon and armour combinations as you progress that all have differing abilities and some are extremely amusing. At one point I managed to craft armour that when I was hit pushed out little colourful tornadoes and that was quite a sight to see. The armour crafting system is actually quite interesting as you can combine different units for different abilities, but if you manage to save up a ton of gold you can go up in the different armour tiers as well to get really really powerful armour, so it really gives you something to work towards. Just don't die or risk losing most of your interesting gear!

As you progress it really can get hard as some monsters seem to just suck up your bullets like they were little treats left on the floor. So, make sure you upgrade your weapons and armour whenever you can.

I think it's fantatic and think you will too, so go check it out on Steam & Humble Store, although Humble only gives you a Steam key.

Linux game-play video
Here's a walkthrough of the first level on Linux for you to see what it's like and it shows off the armour and weapon crafting talked about above.

I'd enjoy trying out this game :) I have been watching it for a few days. Been reading for a while, love the site. I want to win!

P.S. Are you going to be doing any kind of review of the EA to Crea?

Hah that's not my voice that's the in-game voice! I think it sounds more like the nutty scientist from The Simpsons.

I want to win.

Otherwise I might pick it up when it's on sale.

This game looks awesome and I've been watching it since the release. The main thing keeping me from buying is that historically when I bought a game fresh after release, it had several shortcomings like not working achievements, Linux port bugs etc. - and in some reviews I've seen traces of such bugs also in this game. Though I wouldn't mind them that much if you have a free key for me. ;-)
