Unreal Engine is pushing forward at an incredible pace and Unreal Engine 4.2 is no different. The developer tools can now be compiled for Linux amongst many other changes!

This is another step closer to 100% Linux compatibility for all parts of the Unreal Engine and I'm sure will excite many of you.

Of course there are masses of other changes like vehicles being fully supported in unreal engine with a new demo game to show them off. A new camera animation system, a vehicle template to help get started with adding in vehicles and more.

A funny one is since later DirectX versions aren't supported on Windows XP the Unreal Engine developers default to OpenGL for it.

I can't wait to see more games take advantage of it! I really hope more jump-ship to Unreal Engine from Unity as the performance is just in a different class.

Epic Games, if you keep doing this, then i'm afraid your space on Linux gets more more relevant to the Linux gamers..

You better take your comfort place on Linux..

I love the progression!!!..

We appreciate the attention :)

Just for the sake of clarity:
1) not all the tools can be (cross-)compiled for Linux (yet)
2) there are still a lot of bugs/rough edges even in ones that can be.

Realistically, it will take several more releases to get to the point where Linux can be used for developing UE4 games, so don't hold your breath.

However, shipping UE Linux games/demos is possible even now (developing and packaging them from Windows), and we encourage trying that for the sake of better testing.

P.S. Here are a few screenshots of UFE running on Linux (scroll down), contributed by Amigo: https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Building_On_Linux.
