War Thunder MMO Coming To Linux

By -
War Thunder announced a little surprise for us in their E3 video! A Linux version that they have been showing off.

It sounds like the Linux version is already far along, and they noted they are working on the game while they are there too.

About
War Thunder is a next generation MMO combat game dedicated to World War II military aviation, armored vehicles, and fleets. You will take part in all of the major combat battles, fighting with real players all over the world.

War Thunder offers a highly detailed and personalized aviation experience, giving players access to hundreds models of planes with detailed cockpits, dozens of upgradeable weapons, and flying skills that can be honed and improved with each mission. Thanks to the game’s painstaking attention to detail, you’ll truly feel like a World War II fighter pilot as you plunge into battle.

The genuine World War II experience isn’t limited to the skies. The massive historical battles featured in War Thunder cannot be fought by aviation alone, so the game will also expose players to combat on land and at sea.

This seems pretty good. A friend of mine has it on PS4 and talks it up a lot, so I can't wait to see how it plays. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Sweet. Wonder how the tank battles are.

Nice News. Maybe the Game is a bit more fun than Star Conflict.

I have this game on the windows machine. It's fun, beautifull graphics and lots of planes. although I prefer star conflict.
You must destroy all the planes of the other team, or destroy all the ground targets. When you are out of planes you have to wait to the end of the match (If I remember). There are a little variation of weapons, machine-gun, cannon, rockets (only go straight forward), and bombs (few).
It has been some time since I played, but they said it will be ground and sea battles. I don't know how it works.
It's a good addition to the linux collection.

i have played that game quite a while with wine.
it has opengl rendering so it runs pretty good.. but native would be perfect really.
i love it more than star conflict, because of having both air and land combat at the same time.. epic battles.

Nice news!

Honestly, this is the game I have been spending unhealthy amounts of time in over the course of last year (I own almost all the planes available in the game including like half of the premium ones and already got a top tier tank) and while I heard about this earlier, it definitely made me really happy.

If you wanna give it a try right now, go ahead, as mentioned, it has an openGL renderer so it runs like a charm under Wine, but having a Linux native version will be great, partially because it will make recording videos and such even easier and hopefully run even better.

This isn't an MMO, it's a shooter with a progression model and planes/tanks instead of tactical dudes.

The Linux client is already working, it was playable there (just not by general public) -- they don't have any GUI for the launcher yet, which is holding them back.

Ironically, I was talking to my Dad about this yesterday (he's in the video).

It is an MMO. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online air/ground combat game.

Would be nice if World of Tanks got a port as well, but I think the proverbial pig will fly before that happens.

Well, I`m not surprised. They had told about PS4, Mac OS X and Linux more, then one year ago. they created PS4 version and Mac version. So It`s time for Linux version.
