XCOM: Enemy Unknown Released For Linux

By -

The invasion has begun. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is now available on Linux and you can help stop the alien invasion right now.

QuoteSince its inception, the XCOM Project has scoured the globe in search of the best and brightest military and scientific personnel to defend Earth from the alien invasion.

Today marks the availability of a new technology that will enable even more world-class recruits to join the fight, as XCOM: Enemy Unknown is released for Linux.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a SteamPlay title that runs on Ubuntu 14.04 and Valve’s SteamOS. The base game and all the add-on content, including the explosive expansion pack XCOM: Enemy Within, are available now from Steam.

Rookies should report to the XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steam information page for a briefing.

Let us know what you think to it, as for me it will be my first time playing it. Check it out on Steam now.

With the Steam sales happening very soon it may be an idea to hold off on buying it just yet. That is unless you want to support Feral with as much cash as you can throw at the screen for porting to Linux then go ahead right now.

We should have an interview with the guys at Feral soon, so keep an eye out for that too folks.

Anyone know anything about the quality of the port?

Finally!

XCOM:EU is one of the few games I managed to just lose myself in for weeks. I played through in normal difficulty and then twice in a row in hardcore Classic mode. I've been holding off on buying the Enemy Within expansion till the Linux port was ready.

yes! finally the xcom port ^_^

If the port is as good as the Civilization V port i'll buy the dlc

With Civilization V and this port , the door is open for other ports like borderlands 2 and other AA and AAA games ^_^

Ok, 20€ for a modern AAA with a meta of nearly 90 running natively on Linux? It's an instabuy, guys!

The more ports like this that happen the easier it will be for developers to port in future, as they will have the experience ready and hopefully their own tool-sets ready for more.

The future is bright!

I had already bought this a while back on sale. Not sleeping for the next 4 days now, easily one of my favorite games ever.

I've bought it last year after it went on a Free Weekend. My plan was to play it for free on Mac and then wait for the Linux version, but I couldn't contain myself. My hope is that I can buy all the DLC to play it on Linux and make those sales count to our cause.

How are you measuring that?

in a console with steam already launched
voglperfrun64 -s 200510 then type in the console fpsprint on

It's a tool from valve it's useful to mesure the performance, i don't know which distribution you're using but the package is called vogl or voglperf .

Oh yes.

I'll be installing this when I get home. Probably won't get to play it until Saturday though. :(

Really looking forward to the Enemy Within DLC that I've not played yet.
Pinguino Jun 19, 2014
If I remember correctly, they've promised this port for this summer, right? So that puts them two days ahead of schedule. Way to go, Feral, you deserve major respect from the gaming community!
MayeulC Jun 19, 2014
I've never played XCOM, but the trailer was really good.
I'll probably wait for a summer sale, though, otherwise my student wallet may not apreciate all those games I've been getting recently.

Does someone know how it plays on Radeon?
Mike Jun 19, 2014
Oh I didn't see Liam hadn't played it before. You're in for a treat, this game is so unique in many ways and incorporates a number of genres: strategy, sim, management, rpg.

It's damn difficult though. If a soldier dies in your small squad, he's dead forever. If a soldier dies early on in a mission, followed by another, that's pretty much game over. The easiest difficulty is still pretty hard, I recommend this to anyone playing the game for the first time. No point in playing for 8 hours then losing, it's like FTL but more frustrating in that sense.

2K may have to consider more Linux ports, because this is great news. :D

Ohhhh yeah!
