GOL Asks: What Have You Been Playing Recently?

By -
tagline-image
Today is Sunday, so that means generally there isn't much news (that isn't personally backlogged!), so today something different.

A question for you the community, what have you been playing recently and have you enjoyed it? Start recommending good games to your fellow Linux gamers

With all the games we have on Linux now my own personal library of games has grown to incredible levels. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: ApopasUnrealWorld!

Please don't mention this game again. I installed it just out of curiosity and now I can't stop playing it. Don't Starve meets Dwarf Fortress!

It also reminds me to Cryptozookeeper for some reason... maybe the graphics.

Quoting: segulehIf its interesting for some1, my specs: 2 core Phenom [email protected], 4Gb RAM, GTX 460SE. As U can see, it's definitely not a modern "gaming dragon" :D

So about comparable to mine, except you have a newer GPU and I have a faster CPU:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE 3.2 Ghz
Video Card: Diamond AMD Radeon HD 4670
Memory: 4 Gigabytes DDR3 PC10666, 1333 MHz
Hard Drive: 500 GB Western Digital Caviar Black

I do need to upgrade my graphics card one of these days...

I've been playing Skyrim in wine.

Quoting: seguleh"XCOM - Enemy Unknown" cause I was big fan of original Microprose "UFO" series.D

Yeah, me too, in fact I only played the first, probably one of my favorite games ever. I liked it so much that I never even tried one of the sequels, till now. I always feared to be disappointed.
In fact, I like the new one, in many ways, but I still regret the old one in so many ways. And having still a 32-bit Linux, I have only been able to play on Windows.

Well, in this case I have a "gaming turtle" ;)

Proc : Core2Duo @1,6 GHz
RAM : 2GB DDR2
Graphics : Geforce GT9600

I've had 9600GT before I upgrade to 460SE. It's good, stable card for Linux gaming (not every game of course) - recognized by any distro I've tried, and I have it till today - just in case :). I've played "Serious Sam" on it (low settings, about 24fps, lol), "Minecraft" and more. Upgrade CPU and "turtle" becomes hmmm... some kind of significantly faster creature :D.

@Hamish: nice CPU, have U tried "XCOM" on it?

Witcher 2: Still crashing, but after having read two of Sapkowski's Witcher books, I want to see the rest of this story!

Desktop Dungeons: Who knew a single-screen dungeon could be so unforgivable? At least, when you die, it gives you a humorously encouraging after action report. Highly recommended.

X-COM:Enemy Unknown: Touch tactical fun, and another AAA game for Linux.

ReignMaker: This is a mashup of match-3, tower defense, and city building, and pretty much unlike any other game on Steam. Tougher than you might expect, and a lot of fun.

CIV V: the best turn-based strategy game this side of Dominions 4, and AAA almost by definition. And it runs on evary distro you can think of.

A Valley Without Wind 1+2 just appeared in my library today; had bought 'em when I was still dual-booting, and haven't played the Linux versions yet.

And, Doc, Heroes Rise is a completely enjoyable experience.

Oh yeah, ReignMaker really is an unexpected gem :)

The previous FrogDice game, Dungeon of Elements, was a rather odd mashup as well that turned out to be more fun than I'd expect from the description, but this one especially is deeper than at first glance. The match-3 seems like a casual game where most of your brain goes on auto-pilot except for the pattern matching (like with tetris-y games) but you can't afford to just do that in ReignMaker and still beat the bosses -- need to wisely choose your resources ahead of time to fit the battle (pick subset of equipment types, spells types, and only 2 types of troops) and keep deploying them at key points during the battle (each equipment is limited in stock with some quite expensive to rebuy too often; keep track of troops to help keep them alive, or at least call in replacement when one dies; spells need to be powered up with varying number of matches between casts... more powerful needing more matches to recharge).

I do not play Steam exclusive titles, but I imagine it would be bottlenecked anyway by my now aging 2008 era GPU if I did try and play it.

Quoting: AstroThe Last Tinker: City of Colors is something incredibly amazing and infinitely charming. It's not even 5/5, it's 100/100. Probably it's the best game I've ever played in my entire life.

I also really liked that one. Not among my favourites though, but still a very enjoyable game.

This month I've mostly been playing MouseCraft since it came out of Early Access. It still has some Linux issues, but is playable and is a great puzzle game. Half of the fun is in finding solutions that are better than the intended perfect solutions.

Civ5, Don't Starve, Assassin's creed 2, The Longest Journey(if anyone knows any feasible solution to making it run under wine, pls share), Hotline Miami, Bastion, all on small doses unfortunately.
