Note: At the time of writing this there is a save bug within the game. It appears that the first time you play your progress isn't saved on exit, however the dev appears to be looking into this. I'd recommend trying the first level, exiting, and then going back into the game.
Back yonder in the days of yore, I poured hour after hour into my Tony Hawk games on the PS2. It was a catharsis long forgotten until now. Roll7 brings me back a bit with their title OlliOlli: a 2d retro skate-em-up. Unlike the skating games I used to play, OlliOlli drops world exploration for a more arcade-like experience focusing on keeping your combos up and your speed high.
Each level presents you with a skatescape full of grindables and hazards. You may find yourself wiping out quite a few times before you get the hang of it. What tripped me up the most is using the thumbstick to pull of a trick (for instance, to do a kickflip you simply push your stick right and let go) and then using the A button to land it. Grinding is also done with the thumbstick and go from one rail to the next feels very fluid. After I finally got used to not jumping with the A button I found the controls very intuitive and great at allowing the player to pull off moves easily while keeping the pace up.
Some may be turned off by the fact that this was orignally a mobile (i.e. Vita) game, but I think there's plenty of depth here. There are 5 different venues that each have 5 amateur and pro levels (meaning 50 unique levels). There are also 4 game modes: Career (in which you try to complete 5 challenges for each level and advance), Spot (try to get the best possible combo), Rad (even more challenge!), and Daily Grind (a daily leaderboard competition). Not to mention over 120 tricks to pull off that can be looked up in the Tricktionary *bud dum tss*. This should keep those of you high-score hunters busy for sometime.
Those of you who are sick of pixelated indie games (you weirdos!) will be half-relieved to know that OlliOlli smacks more of PS1 low-res graphics than something on the NES. Personally, I find the art style pretty charming. The soundtrack is a beautiful collection from different artists that starts with some pulse-raising techno and brings it down with a more jazzy, glitch-hop score (you can listen here). It all comes together to give an intensely fun experience, and I'm sure I'll be playing until I can perfect every level.
You can pick OlliOlli up on Steam and the Humble Store.

Is this a regional thing? I'm seeing $11.69 on both stores.
