Sandbox Game Maker Coming Soon To Steam

Platinum Arts Sandbox Game Maker (now that's a mouthful!) is an interesting 3D game engine that is based on Cube2 to allow you to create games easily, and edit them real-time in the game itself.

There's a lot of competition in the game engine market now, so it will be interesting to see how far this one goes. It's interesting to me to see a game kit based on another engine to allow such easy world editing.

Features
- Easy to use (level editor and scripting tool can be called from inside the engine/a running game).
- Cross-platform (Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, Windows) due to relying on SDL2.
- Scripting language: Lua
- Comes with templates for FPS, platformers and RPGs.
- Edit maps real-time with other users online or via LAN
- Perfectly suited for beginners and experts alike (a free, slightly less high-tech release is used in schools throughout the US and our CEO is a teacher himself).
- Includes a number of assets.
- Has already been greenlit on Steam
- Free version with less features using a different scripting language is available at our homepage.
- *nix systems (Mac OS X and GNU/Linux) are a main focus

The developers email in as they are Linux lovers and so it's only appropriate that we give them a little shout out for doing some interesting work.

When speaking to the developer about this, they noted this:
QuoteThe way Sandbox works is that all the content is created in-engine/in-game. The engine includes a real time level editor. After one is done placing all entities (lights, enemies, static or usable items, etc), he/she can swiftly leave edit mode and get right into the action.

A finished game basically includes a binary blob of the engine and all map files, textures, audio and LUA scripts.

Once live, we are going to offer a progressive/tiered pricing model. Buying early gets you all the future updates but at a lower price.


It has been greenlit, so thankfully Sandbox Game Maker will be coming to a Steam store near you soon!

seems a very descent engine...

I am thinking to start exploring game engines on my vacation and to try to make at least a very tiny game.
what game engine would you recommend for amateurs to make a descent looking game in Linux ?

Unity?
Leadwerks?

anything else that doesn't require much of coding...??

Thanks for the very nice writeup, Liam.

Once I've set up an appropriate dev environment and we are ready to push out the first alpha release, I'll make sure to send you guys additional material.
