A fantastic looking and free visual novel with strategy elements is now on Steam for Linux and it's good. It's another in a long list built with the Ren'py software.

It's completely free thanks to the previous Kickstarter campaign, and so it will always remain free which is great.

I've said before that I never really "get" visual novels, and I would have been saying the same today until I gave Sunrider a proper shot. The visuals are fantastic in it and the story isn't too bad either.

The visuals are done in an interesting way with beautiful static images that have animations placed on top of them, and it makes it look good while not taking as long to create full animations or videos. The Sunrider is an awesome looking ship and really tickles my sci-fi fans fancy.

There are some things about it I didn't like however. When you are speaking you aren't always shown on-screen, the person you're speaking to is left on-screen and that threw me off a little. In the first 20 minutes I saw myself once.

There are also moments that explain something is going on, but there's no artwork to go with it, so you are left with the last person you spoke to it seems and it seems to have a lot of little oversights like that in it.

They are only little things, but enough to make what would be a fantastic game now just a good game with nice visuals. It's free though, so it's no loss if you don't like it, but I do suggest giving it a go and seeing what you think.

If you try it be sure to come back and tell us what you think to it!

The turn-based combat makes it quite different from what I thought a visual novel would be like. It's fun -- thanks for the recommendation, I don't think I would have bothered playing otherwise :D

You should give the game a try, it's quite good.

As for the song, Sunrider uses 3 songs from Iced Blade. The one in the video is "Chiru Hana" featuring the vocal of Lily-an. The other two songs (which are not in the video)are:
1. "Sora no Senritsu ~Melody of Cosmos~" featuring Lily-an
2. "Firn" featuring Lily-an and Maya.

Note: Takanashi "Corey" Keita is the composer and guitar player from Iced Blade. He is an anisong (anime song) and game music composer. His previous works include composing and arranging the Katekyo Hitman Reborn character song "Perfect World - Byakuran," and Fortissimo EXA//Akkord:Bsusvier extra song, "Umbrella.". At this moment he is working on a character song for Sola (one of the character is Sunrider) and it's called "Lost History".
