Morning! We begin today with some big news folks. It looks like both Torchlight & Torchlight II are due to be released on Steam for Linux.
We recently ran an article wondering what happened to Torchlight Linux, as it seemed to be forgotten about, so be sure to read up on it.
The first Torchlight game came to Linux as part of a Humble Indie Bundle 6, but it never made it onto Steam for unknown reasons. So, if this turns out in our favour then people who missed out will not only be able to get the first game, but the rest of us will be able to play the second too.
For those that don't know the Torchlight games are action RPG games that are commonly compared to games like Diablo. They are good fun, and easy to get into.
Both of the game have recently been updated on SteamDB to show this:

This isn't confirmed yet, but it's great supporting evidence.
*sniff* *sniff* I think I can smell a new Humble Bundle brewing don't you? It's been a few months since a new Humble Indie Bundle was launched and I imagine Torchlight II would be a decent game to include for Linux & Mac gamers especially. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I was waiting for torchlight & torchlight 2 !
I played a little bit torchlight2 on wine but after some updates the game doesn't launch anymore.
It's a really good game with a lot of mods , i hope they'll eventually work on linux.

I bought Torchlight from the Humble Bundle, despite I already owned it on gamersgate (who by the way still don't have the linux version either), and it's a great game when you want some fun. It's good that they seem to be working on a Linux port of Torchlight II, but I wonder if it's worth buying it. I mean, how much different can it be form the first ? If anyone has played Torchlight 1 and 2, and can give me some advice..
Same for Warlock, by the way, I would love to see a Linux port for Warlock 1, even if in this case I will probably buy Warlock 2 when the Linux version comes out, because it seems rather different, and even more polished than the first.

I played both. I can't really remember that much from the first though so keep that in mind but I can say I did enjoy the second more.

I've played more than enough of the first one at this point; but I look forward to playing the second one natively.
I'd say the biggest difference with the two games is the second is much more varied. The areas are much bigger and there's often more choice about where to go. It's not quite open world though.

I have played both. TL natively and TL2 via wine due to impatient. The linux version of TL wasn't really modable and had missing faces for a very long time but other than some early version crashes was really smooth. TL2 in wine played perfectly. The upsides of TL2 are more pets and the classes are more varied then the typical barbarian,mage,archer setup of the first one. The gameplay its self is nearly identical and the graphics are not improved but the world design is more open and less dungeon which I think makes the game a little less grindy feeling. Overall I think TL2 is the better game.
I never believed TL2 would come, I must say I can't wait to replay this game native.

Oh and to mention the big difference between I and II; the latter supports multiplayer which for me was the main thing to be very happy about. Also the Steam Workshop support can add some very wonderful mods, some which can even add a class.
Would be just wonderful to also play TLII on Linux!

Holy … ! Torchlight II natively for Linux would be nothing less than amazing!
If they’re going to release the game for Linux though I really hope that it will also be available as stand-alone/DRM-free version. (Yep, a new Indie Humble Bundle would be great!)
I own both, Torchlight and Torchlight II. Since I got Torchlight II I never looked back to the first game. In my opinion, Torchlight II is superior to the first game in almost every respect. Of course, game play is pretty much the same and the story isn't any complex either. But from the technical side it's way better. In my opinion it has a dense atmosphere to it whereas the first game was merely a fun game.

If anyone has played Torchlight 1 and 2, and can give me some advice..Well, I played Torchlight 2 during its beta I think, so it was quite some time ago and the game might have evolved since (and the version I played was somewhat limited with only the first zone and so on).
Basically, while Torchlight is a pretty neat clone of Diablo, Torchlight 2 is a pretty neat clone of... Diablo 2: more zones with outlands, more character classes I think, a skill tree working quite the same. Gameplay is pretty much the same as D2 but with more colorful graphics.
It is quite a good hack'n slash but I think it was released about the same time as Diablo 3, which made the D2 gameplay kind of old. It deserved Torchlight 2, which seemed dated and too oldschool.
If you played and enjoyed Diablo 2, you'll probably like Torchlight 2 a lot. The same if you played the first Torchlight, the sequel being bigger, with more varied gameplay and a lot of stuff. Besides, Diablo 3 isn't available on Linux so there's not much to compare.
