Thanks to the quick tweeting work from SteamDB we now know Valve could be changing their controller yet again.
This is the new design:
This was the last one shown off for reference:
You can find it if you opt-in to the Steam Beta, and do a little search for "controller" inside the Steam directory.
Looks like they caved and added a stick to it, but that's not a bad idea as honestly I much prefer moving a little stick if a game resorts to something resembling a D-PAD it just feels nicer.
What do you think to this newer design?

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
love the stick and pad on left. now... if i only found d-pad, that would be best controller design ever

Come on now, why do they copy the position of the ABXY buttons from the Xbox controller that is a rip off from the Nintendo controllers already instead of copying the position straight from the original?
The controller seems to have improved anyway.

I prefer a D-Pad over joystick if the game was designed for it. But a joystick is good too and I think is a better choice overall because it allows more functionality for different types of games

I think that's the kicker here. They are going for compatibility while still having their brand new touchpad style as the main focus. A stick serves the purpose as both a D-PAD & as a directional stick if you want/need it.

If they are going to place an analog stick anyway they should make something like this.

They shouldn't remove the d-pad, it's easier to change weapons or choose items with it don't you think?

While I do like thumb-sticks, I'd really like I nice D-Pad for when I'm in a NES/SNES mood. Even the 360's is very annoying. Guess I'll have to keep my PS3 controller handy.

The RG LG Buttons are a excellent innovation.
I don't really care where the buttons are as long as it fits right in my hands. Anyone remember how Xbox 2000 Controllers were giant at first?
I wouldn't mind if you could unscrew the touch-pads and replace them with joysticks

I don't fully understand the point of the joystick - isn't the left touchpad intended to work as that? Without a solid d-pad, fighting games will be unplayable (as anyone who ever tried to play a fighting game on any of the xbox systems would know). One of the things I was really looking forward to is the revival of indie fighting games on PC. I'd love to see another awesome fighting game like OMF 2097 show up on steam.
It really needs a d-pad for that to happen, though.
