A Very Important Announcement For You

By -
Today we have an important announcement to make for you, the GOL community. Before you go reading any further, please remain calm and read the whole article through before making any rushed decisions or leaving comments.

Liam, the founder and the chief editor of GamingOnLinux, has taken a break from writing for the website. He has had rough times for a while and it hasn't helped that he works online, where he's also exposed to a lot of hatred or comments he might interpret as being hateful. I'm not saying that you should feel guilty for any criticism you've left on the website, because I'm sure that many of you haven't meant it in a bad way.

Liam believes that his situation is rather serious and we should respect his decision to do something else for a while to clear up the things in his personal life. I ask you not to be angry at him. We all have our share of setbacks in life and Liam has had a plenty of them recently. It's not our job to judge whether or not he's capable of running the website at this moment, nor should we judge if these setbacks are his fault. We can only hope that he can get up on his feet soon.

So, what does this mean for the website?

Well, first of we are not going to simply give up and disappear. I will continue to write for GOL and I hope that other editors will also do that. But the rate of articles might be seriously affected. Liam was responsible for a huge majority of the articles per month and we might not be able to reach his speed. So, I'm asking for the community to step up and help us.

Many of you might already be aware of the possibility to write your own articles. This functionality has been around for at least as long as I've been involved in GOL. So, I'm asking you to help us by contributing articles about anything related to Linux gaming. Reviews, opinion pieces, organized events, giveaways, tutorials and news articles are all welcome. You won't be doing it for nothing either. If you submit enough quality articles, you will be given a “Contributing Editor” badge and eventually you might get promoted to full Editor status. These ranks will allow you to get premium features, like themes, an ad-less experience and any of the future premium features that we might add.

You can find the link to the article editor in the side-bar under the “Popular this week” and “View by category” sections. The link is named “Submit Article”, you can't miss it.

If you want more information about writing articles for GOL, feel free to pop into our IRC channel to ask questions or simply chat with us.

What about the GOL Supporters and Patreon patrons?

Supporters and patrons are the our biggest source of income, as far as I know. We've been mostly relying on your contributions to stay afloat. That means that you are very important for us, so losing you would be catastrophic. We'll try to keep up the quality you paid to support and we will do our best to get you your supporter badges if you have already paid for those.

Things might be a bit hectic for a while as we figure out how things like server costs, donation/ad incomes, user badges and article writing are handled. I'll try my best to keep in touch with Liam so that we can get everything sorted out.

Thank you for your support and keep calm. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I'm a Linux gamer from Finland. I like reading, long walks on the beach, dying repeatedly in roguelikes and ripping and tearing in FPS games. I also sometimes write code and sometimes that includes hobbyist game development.

Haters gonna hate, this is internet and its still to immature and the users that uses it. Its sad to hear that we get alot of hate commens here on GOL, but I guess we the real fans, GoL supporter or linux users, gamers or whatever u want to call us can spread some more positivety in the forums.

Wish u the best Liam and I hope u get back soon.
To keep up the good work :).

I'm not a native English speaker but I'll try to contribute an article every now and then if it can be of any help.

Improving English is something I can do, tracking down news is something I personally can not promise to be able to do - so even if you are not entirely confident in your writing just giving us a framework for an article can still be a huge help.

All the best wishes Liam.

I am very sorry Liam, I hope things will get better for you.

I'll still check this site everyday. <3

Thanks for the work so far Liam, and I hope you get back to it again in not too long. The speed you had really baffled me at times, the number of articles you wrote and their lengths and depths. Interviews, editorials and straight up announcements, all really helpful. This site has become the #1 source for gaming on Linux, at a time when gaming on Linux is actually taking off and becoming even more exciting than when Loki were still around.

I hope you just need a breather and will be back soon, but thanks for the work done either way.

Thanks, I'll remember that the next time I feel tempted to write something. There's the announcement from Freebird Games that haven't been covered but that's old news by now.

It's sad to hear about your troubles Liam, I really hope things get better. It saddens me more that you have had negative comments and I would like to compensate a bit for that negativity by saying that you have made a great site and a great community surrounding it.

I'm sure lots of people will chip in and keep things going while you are away, we're Linux gamers after all. I'll add my bit and try and do a couple of articles per week.

Thanks for everything!

@Liam: I hope you'll get better soon, you were surely the main driving force behind the site!

If I'll come up with any ideas about articles, I can contribute.

I love everything about this site, the people who run it, and the caring community that helps make it the best site for Linux gaming. It's my home page..its my all time first priority to browse through before i do anything else on the internet. This site has gotten me more excited about Linux gaming than any other site could. Liam, you are a awesome person. I hope you have a great time off. You deserve it bro! Also thanks to all the other people who contribute to this page with posts, and helpful information. My #1 fav place to be on the internet.

Congrats on looking after yourself Liam. It's a hard step to take, but sometimes you've got to put your self first, so that you can regain the strength you need. I appreciate this website so hard, it's introduced me to some really fine games. Much fun. This is a good excuse to look through your back catalogue and see if any of my favourites need a write up. Hopefully this leads to more spreading of the load - and I would also like to shout out to those supporting Liam, and his life, and this site right now. Awesome work, keep the treasure safe.

Love the site, sorry to hear its guru is on the ropes. Everyone needs a break once and a while; charge the batteries. I'll be keeping an eye out for your triumphant return

Hi Liam

I'm sorry to hear that you are going through a difficult time currently.
I hope you can find the strength to get through it all.
I really wish you all the best for the future.

I also would like to thank you for such a great site, I'm addicted to it since I discovered it last year.
The news, reviews and throughput has been fantastic.

So glad to know that you are still on the sidelines and I look forward to your return.

Thanks for all your hard work.
Long live GOL.

Thanks to ElectricPrism for mentioning RSS feed - I didn't realize it was there.

The problem is that most people never realize how much work is involved. Sadly, most feedback you get as the operator of such a page seems to be negative because most of your happy readers never really bother to give any positive feedback.

Now I found myself making this mistake as well. I regularly visit this page for about a year now, reading most of the articles and really enjoying the steady flow of information. Still, I never said "thank you" until now. Let's change this :)

Thank you Liam for all the work you have put into this page! Thank you to all other contributors as well! Linux gaming

Liam, I really hope life will be great for you again really soon!

I created this account mainly to write this but maybe I will even find some time to contribute to the page in the future.

Life has a habit of getting in the way sometimes, at those times you just have to walk away from everything you enjoy to deal with the less fun stuff.

Anyone who doesn't understand obviously hasn't had their entire lives suddenly crash down round their ears, they don't know how lucky they are & how stupid as well for moaning about it when someone else has to step away for those reasons.

Liam, I know we don't know each other but I just want to wish you all the luck in the world with whatever it is & hope you can get it sorted asap.
STiAT 17 Aug 2014
All the best Liam, especially for private and family stuff.

There was some discussion on this site before about what's still critism and what's not, and even there we tended to disagree about what's critism and where it't the line to not being critism anymore. Even there in the discussion we had a lot of disagreements about it :D.

As someone whose private life has certainly interfered with the things I like to do, I completely understand Liam's decision, and hope that (perhaps) I can step up and contribute more to what has become a daily must-read webpage.
