A Very Important Announcement For You

By -
Today we have an important announcement to make for you, the GOL community. Before you go reading any further, please remain calm and read the whole article through before making any rushed decisions or leaving comments.

Liam, the founder and the chief editor of GamingOnLinux, has taken a break from writing for the website. He has had rough times for a while and it hasn't helped that he works online, where he's also exposed to a lot of hatred or comments he might interpret as being hateful. I'm not saying that you should feel guilty for any criticism you've left on the website, because I'm sure that many of you haven't meant it in a bad way.

Liam believes that his situation is rather serious and we should respect his decision to do something else for a while to clear up the things in his personal life. I ask you not to be angry at him. We all have our share of setbacks in life and Liam has had a plenty of them recently. It's not our job to judge whether or not he's capable of running the website at this moment, nor should we judge if these setbacks are his fault. We can only hope that he can get up on his feet soon.

So, what does this mean for the website?

Well, first of we are not going to simply give up and disappear. I will continue to write for GOL and I hope that other editors will also do that. But the rate of articles might be seriously affected. Liam was responsible for a huge majority of the articles per month and we might not be able to reach his speed. So, I'm asking for the community to step up and help us.

Many of you might already be aware of the possibility to write your own articles. This functionality has been around for at least as long as I've been involved in GOL. So, I'm asking you to help us by contributing articles about anything related to Linux gaming. Reviews, opinion pieces, organized events, giveaways, tutorials and news articles are all welcome. You won't be doing it for nothing either. If you submit enough quality articles, you will be given a “Contributing Editor” badge and eventually you might get promoted to full Editor status. These ranks will allow you to get premium features, like themes, an ad-less experience and any of the future premium features that we might add.

You can find the link to the article editor in the side-bar under the “Popular this week” and “View by category” sections. The link is named “Submit Article”, you can't miss it.

If you want more information about writing articles for GOL, feel free to pop into our IRC channel to ask questions or simply chat with us.

What about the GOL Supporters and Patreon patrons?

Supporters and patrons are the our biggest source of income, as far as I know. We've been mostly relying on your contributions to stay afloat. That means that you are very important for us, so losing you would be catastrophic. We'll try to keep up the quality you paid to support and we will do our best to get you your supporter badges if you have already paid for those.

Things might be a bit hectic for a while as we figure out how things like server costs, donation/ad incomes, user badges and article writing are handled. I'll try my best to keep in touch with Liam so that we can get everything sorted out.

Thank you for your support and keep calm. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I'm a Linux gamer from Finland. I like reading, long walks on the beach, dying repeatedly in roguelikes and ripping and tearing in FPS games. I also sometimes write code and sometimes that includes hobbyist game development.

Liam, you can be proud of your work.
I wish you the best.

Thank you for the kind words everyone. This is some of the nicest stuff I've ever seen people say about me and GamingOnLinux and it's pretty refreshing to see it. I certainly feel a lot better about things reading all this.

Thank you everyone.

I understand that decision very well. I had to drop out of my open source development projects a few years back due to personal reasons, which left behind a whole distribution with unusable stuff. But I had to do that decision for my own sake.

Sometimes it's important to look first at your life, family and serious business for you before going back. Even though, in my case I never went back (but there is a replacement / better solution in development now after 4 years, and I know because I lately started to look and analyze this solution, maybe I go back providing patches and fixes for it).

I like the site, and I think the staff and people are great and are putting a lot of hard work into this, the articles usually well researched, and as a supporter I have no intention to drop the support for the page any time soon just over this issue (except if the site dies, ofc :D).

Thank you, Samsai, for letting us know.

Liam, take care of yourself. That's the most important thing. We will do what we can to continue the output of this really great site.

Liam,

you have been doing a great job -- maybe too great. Just about every community this size has some people who are too self-centered to care how their arguing and criticizing can demoralize people who are doing all the hard work. Or maybe they have a handicap that prevents them from even realizing it. Not to mention ordinary folks can be having a bad day and say something stupid.

On the whole GOL is better than most online communities, and I chalk it up to good leadership. If you ever get to a better place in your own life where you are strong enough to come back and lead GOL, I'll be ready to do a monthly pledge again (and hope to be able to talk more people into sponsoring for that matter!)

Wait, do this mean I have to return to scan the Steam Store for new releases again? Dang.

Liam,
good luck with whatever it is that is haunting you. I'll let my (recently started) supporter status roll while you regain strength to carry on with GOL. But you better get back. Soon. :)

take care liam, i wish u the very best. dont mind the negative elements and trolls on the net. they are just not worth it. its very easy too lash out at someone from behind a monitor and not caring what the effect is on the recieving end.
I for one don't have any issues with the work u presented here, it was always very accurate and to the point. GOL is and will be my main source for linux gaming, so get the negativity sorted out and as most of us here i cant wait to welcome u back. see u soon :)
