This is the first time a AAA game has had a same-day Linux release announced ever. This is quite a historic milestone don't you think? It again just shows you how far our platform has come. It's a good time to see how strong sales can be for Linux for such a big title, so we should make this one count.
Aspyr Media are really coming through for us as a game porter, so be sure to grab a copy to support them. The Borderlands games themselves are really quite fun with the blend of over-the-top shooting action with the random loot and RPG mechanics.
This is a time when I am actually comfortable telling people to pre-order something, and that pretty much never happens.
We spoke to Aspyr Media about how the port went and how they feel about being part of the first same-day release for a AAA game like this:
QuoteSimultaneously shipping our Linux and Mac versions along side the Windows version has been a dream of ours for years and certainly a strong request from the gaming community. I can’t say enough about how Gearbox and 2K came through as partners to make that happen. We can’t wait for Linux gamers to get their hands on this CRAZY fun game on Oct 14th!
Official About
LAUNCH INTO THE BORDERLANDS UNIVERSE AND SHOOT ‘N’ LOOT YOUR WAY THROUGH A BRAND NEW ADVENTURE THAT ROCKETS YOU ONTO PANDORA’S MOON IN BORDERLANDS: THE PRE-SEQUEL!
Discover the story behind Borderlands 2 villain, Handsome Jack, and his rise to power. Taking place between the original Borderlands and Borderlands 2, the Pre-Sequel gives you a whole lotta new gameplay featuring the genre blending fusion of shooter and RPG mechanics that players have come to love.
Float through the air with each low gravity jump while taking enemies down from above using new ice and laser weapons. Catch-a-ride and explore the lunar landscape with new vehicles allowing for more levels of destructive mayhem.
Also GameAgent.com which is run by Aspyr Media now supports Linux, so you can support Aspyr directly without Steam taking a cut if that's your thing. Seems like a great way to support the developer directly, and you get Steam keys of course. It was something Linux users requested, so they made it happen.
If you don't wish to use GameAgent then pre-order Borderlands: The Pre-sequel for Linux on Steam. Can't see a reason not to support Aspyr directly though.
Excited yet? I'm excruciatingly happy.
Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Crazy awesome news! DLing BL2 right now. I just wish us nvidia users had physx in linux. AMD users say what you want about it, but Borderlands uses it and it's frackin amazing with it. I will be sure to play it on linux for the first 10-15 hours, but I have a feeling that Ill end up switching to windows (Flame suit engaged) after that unfortunately. Would be fan-f*ckin-tastic if we got linux physx by the time The PreSequal drops.

>> GameAgent.com ... and you get Steam keys
Do they actually give you a Steam key? I did not find that information anywhere on that page :/

Interested in this as well.
I don't need it on steam, but I'm wondering if not having it on steam would hurt Linux statistics wouldn't it? Considering that this is the first AAA game with same day release as the OP said that wouldn't be good, we need this to show decent statistics.
I'm almost not sure if it would be better to let steam take a cut just to be sure my sale adds to their records.
But if we can support Aspyr directly and also get steam keys (these would show up in statistics right?) that would be best.

Yes you get steam keys, I bought a bunch of dlc today from them.
When you get to the checkout you get told it's a steam key.

Borderlands 2 has it forced to Low as it says here, http://steamcommunity.com/app/49520/discussions/0/616189106749909144/#p2 on this thread. Let's hope PhysX gets fully implemented by all parties soon!
Let's hope PhysX dies soon. It's annoying how nvidia promised that it would run on cpus and AMD is always blamed, when nvidia bought the company behind physx and closed it up like it did with everything. :(

Either UT2k3 or UT2k4 (or both?) even had Linux binaries on the DVD.

LOL, I figured someone would hate on it. The hate is justified and I mostly agree, but I am glad that I have nvidia hardware for games that do use it. Especially the borderlands franchise, hate it or not BL does an amazing job of utilizing it and after playing 133 hours with it and then not having advanced physx in the linux port sucks a lot.

I know it "has physx", but it's CPU bound right now. So it doesn't use the GPU and is why it's locked to low in this game. That's what I meant. So YES! lets hope GPU physx gets enabled soon, and the ports with it disabled or set to low get updated to utilize it.

I'm glad you can enjoy it, I really am. Still I hope nvidia learns their lesson and goes open or dies. Personally I can't justify to buy a nvidia card. Apart from the fact that I'm quite content with my AMD card and mesa, I simply don't want to use closed source software if I can avoid it.
Plus: I don't want to wait on nvidia to release compatible drivers if I update my kernel or x.org. Well, these are problems you only face with a rolling release distro, I guess :D
edit: I even thought about getting a nvidia card for physx alone a few months back, but now that nvidia changed this as well, it wouldn't work anymore -.-
