Dean Hall the creator of DayZ originally mentioned on reddit his interest in getting a Linux version, and he was also caught on video mentioning it at PAX.

That sounds pretty likely to me as he seems quite interested in it personally. It remains to be seen if the switch to OpenGL and Linux port will come out anytime soon, but this is another very encouraging sign.
Official About
DayZ is a gritty, authentic, open-world survival horror hybrid-MMO game, in which players follow a single goal: to survive in the harsh post-apocalyptic landscape as long as they can. Players can experience powerful events and emotions arising from the ever-evolving emergent gameplay. There are no superficial tips, waypoints, built in tutorials or help given to players. Every decision matters, there are no save games, no extra lives, every mistake can be lethal. If you fail, you lose everything and you need to play again from the beginning with nothing but your wits, and your two hands. Fight the hostile environment, where every other player can be friend or foe and nothing can be taken for granted.

As long Valve is heading to a final build in its SteamOS/Machines we will keep getting new games...
Lets pray that their OS begin a new age for PC games market by reaching consoles sells number and VALVE only will reach it ever if SteamOS/Machine gets a easy-friendly, reliable plataform as itss strong point.
Love it or not, Valve has in their hands the future of PC games market...
As some new AAA games(DR3,MGSV) are only getting a STEAM release not a PC release same as DayZ.
STEAM FTW!

i like how they push linux but the idea of steam within gnu/linux is perverting the actual idea of free software. what we trade here is freedom for convenience and the sole reason i go along with it is that i hope when steam dies off one day (and it will, all does eventually) it will have pushed linux a little. whenever i can i buy my games in DRM free fashion and dodge steam like the plague. i like what they do to push the developement of linux but still i see it as a trade with the devil.

DRM-Free has nothing to do with that freedom concept from linux, its only a freedom in management of CLOSED-softwares, just like "moving box" by not touching/seeing its content, so I yet dont see why so much hate of it(DRM).
STEAM is the main or only reason why PC is getting new games(Metal Gear, Dead Rising, Ryse), so I dont believe it will die ever, at most some co will surpass it.
U could always play offline in STEAM though.

I don't want the hassle of installing games, I don't want the hassle of backing up save games, I don't want the hassle of physical media. (And lets not forget that SteamOS is not a walled garden - you can always install from other sources.) These are far greater freedoms that we gain than what we lose with having steam as the primary (but not only) platform for distributing games.
Steam FTW.

Then support GOG's Linux efforts with all your might. I certainly want to, but GOG is taking its sweet time with introducing Linux games.STEAM FTW!i like how they push linux but the idea of steam within gnu/linux is perverting the actual idea of free software. what we trade here is freedom for convenience and the sole reason i go along with it is that i hope when steam dies off one day (and it will, all does eventually) it will have pushed linux a little. whenever i can i buy my games in DRM free fashion and dodge steam like the plague. i like what they do to push the developement of linux but still i see it as a trade with the devil.

These are far greater freedoms that we gain than what we lose with having steamyou dont get any freedom, what you get are conveniences. theres nothing wrong about convenience, but you actually trade your freedom for them. sure its proprietary anyway but on steam you even loose your ability to resell, gift or lend the games. you give up your last bit of freedom over software (because you dont actually buy it, you buy an extension of steam that lets you play a certain game) and you are even ok with that because of convience.
closed source games are like a car where you cannot open the hood (and just like with software most people wont mind because they have no clue anyway). but with steam you dont even get the car, you buy the key that lets you drive the car. sure ultimativly it means the same - you can drive, but step by step you hand over possibilies and rights just because someone promisses to wash your car in return (or cloud your saves :p)
and by that they make you think you have to trade freedom for convenience and you are even ok with it

Not this again please! There are other threads specifically for arguing about DRM and Steam.
Thankyou. And I have nothing to say about the subject of this particular thread as I've never seen this game in action (but will check it out if there's a Linux port) :P

This. Ever since I joined GOL this has been raging. Talk about it somewhere else.

there is no trade with the devil you speak of. in order for linux to grow it has to get acceptance of commercial software. as simple as that.
if developer of app A won't write linux version of his software, company that depends on it can never move on linux. that probably means that developer of app B will never see reason to write his own app for linux. every little push matters.
what you preach is false religion that only hurts linux adoption. as long as you can avoid closed software or at least securely contain it when you can't avoid it. free or commercial doesn't matter as long as you're the one deciding

I hope that Arma 3 will be ported to Linux someday...

DayZ is far from ready but hopefully it is going to be a great game eventually. I'm a bit disappointed that it will be ported to consoles mainly because it could possible mean sacrifices to UI and gameplay.
Valve and Steam all the way. They are pushing Linux and open technologies forward.

DRM free software is just as commercial. it is only the distribution system that is free, the product itself still is unfree. with steam you give up even that freedom - as i said before you do so willingly because they bribe you with convenience. there are a lot of people like you that argue "in order to grow, linux has to do concessions" and while you are right that its the easy way i refuse to accept that its the right one.
you may think that people like me are annoying to bring up such a topic again, but its my conviction that it is the most important one there is for us linux gamers. if there wasnt so much anxiety and discussion going on about freedom of software etc., we wouldnt even be here. it concerns me how people here worship steam without doubts.

It has been raging here since it is a very important discussion with very little resolution that we as a community do indeed have to engage with; that being said, it is not strictly on topic here, so you are correct in that this thread is not the best place to continue talking about it.

I just hope that Linux is not on their list of "thing to do when we have nothing else to do" like with some other games.

Guys, if you want to debate DRM make a forum post this is not the place.

Sounds good, so should I prepare remove Win from my PC, once and for all?

I certainly did, and I have enough Steam for Linux games that I can play whatever game suits my current mood, from frenetic action to turn-based strategy, from real-time strategy to adventure, from godlike, action RPG to straight RPG, horror, platform, tower defense, space shooter, puzzle, and MMORPG. Who needs a porous, vulnerable, slow, balky, annoying Windows installation at all?

I am inching closer and closer. I honesly have not booted it to actually use it in forever excpet for about an hour a week or two ago to try out Metro 2033 Redux from my buddies steam acct. just out of curiosity(dont wanna install mine til linux ver). The game is going to be awesome if it really has graphic parity with windows like they "say", though I was annoyed with win after 20 min.
I have 2 250gb samsung 840 evo ssd'd in this rig. One has linux and one has windows.. I'm running out of room on my linux drive because of games mostly. I think I am going to go removing games from windows before long and shrink it's partition to give some to linux so I can have MORE LINUX GAMES! ;) Ive begun testing a lot of my "old" games to find out what does and does not play well with wine. My rig, albeit aging is still fairly powerful so most things seem to run just fine. Would be WONDERFUL if wine started to dig into DX11.
while off topic anyways, I just finished up playing the new Wolfenstein game (in wine, runs perfect) last night. If anyone is a FPS lover and have not played it yet... GO PLAY IT! The best straight up FPS in a LONG time. IMO of course.
Now back to topic. I don't own DayZ, but I would be all over a linux port!!
