Garry's Mod Hits the 6 Million Mark!

By -

Garry's Mod has hit 6 million lifetime sales on Steam now and that's an incredible milestone. The developer also showed off how many are from Linux & Mac.

I suggest not reading the replies as they are the usual hating on Linux.

Garry did further comment on this too:

@johnsto That's partially true. It sold half of that since last year (after linux/osx versions were available)

I'm unsure if he means half of it was before the Linux release, or if half of that was just after the release, and then half over the last year.

Considering it's only been officially on Linux for a year that gives him a pre-taxing revenue from Linux at around £169,648.78 (going by the current £5.99 price).
Not bad at all.

I would say for a rather old game that a lot of Linux users already owned (for playing in Wine or Dual-booting) that is pretty good to see it still get that many new sales. It just goes to show not only how popular the game is, but also that Linux does sell.

The nay-sayers don't look into it enough to realise a vast amount of Linux users would have already owned it, so ignore them and don't get into internet arguments over it. Just a tip of the day!

Massive congratulations to Garry and the team.

Official About

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Give Garry's Mod some more love by buying it on Steam for Linux if you still don't own it.

Yeah, I owned it (and barely played it) for years. I only played it again (briefly) when it became available for Linux. It's a building block to other people's work though, not really "worth it" on its own. The mod my mates wanted me to buy it for was called... eh... Trouble in Terror Town? Something like that. I couldn't really get into it.

So, yeah, decent figures all things considered. Half as many in the past year, so that's 3 million units sold? 1% of 3 million is 30k units. About right. In fact, surprisingly high when you consider how many Linux people will already own this.

I mean, Linux users are only 1% right? But here's someone who's made 1% sales DESPITE a large portion of the existing 1% already owning it.

I'd love to see how many of us actually did own this for a while. If there were a lot, it would suggest that Linux gamers represent a fair bit more than 1%, or that we've done a heap of re-buying/gifting existing games for our platform to boost figures.

My kids absolutely adore this game. I didn't buy it till after it was ported to Linux.

I'm probably going to give it a try. I don't own it yet but I heard a lot of good about it.

again with all the hate and profitability... how about a little support and gratitude for a platform, aka linux, that even without huge sales has prevented their own platforms from being locked away and to be decided what enters and what not in their market

Valve was able to see it and only (one big reason) it supports linux is to avoid being locked in... why dont you all developers do the same, even if you dont use it yourself (you dont use it probably coz your dont know better anyway)...

Its a little cost, that prevents apocalipse over your heads... apple (and microsoft now) want to tell you what you can and what cannt sell... support that little guy that by his mere presence prevents it from happening.

dont fool yourself... if ms had no linux alternative, it would had happen long ago...

This should be on the heads of every windows developer out there... even If they are on a thigh budget

The article is spot on, Liam. Exactly what I was going to say.

I bought this like many years ago and at that time I didn't even know Linux existed (been using Linux for about 2 years now). So I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people were windows/mac users when they originally bought Garry's Mod as it's almost been out for like 8 years.

I certainly owned it long before the port. And to be fair it's stuff like this that is stopping people from buying it!
Xylemon Sep 11, 2014
I wish Garry would put more effort into the Linux port, everyone I've known who has played this game on Linux has experienced nothing but problems (one of them even tried it via Wine to just escape the issues).

Never has an industry fought so hard to NOT take people's money as they do in Linux computing.

Nice to see sales numbers from a real developer. I have to admit I'm amazed at just how many Windows users there still are in the world. People who say Microsoft is in trouble are fooling themselves.

I'll definitely buy Garry's Mod. Probably won't play it, but I'll buy.
