Gauntlet Linux Version Delayed For Steam Machines

By -

Some of you may be wondering what happened to the Linux release of the new Gauntlet game, well we have the answer for you.

The odd thing about this whole thing is that they publicly confirmed Linux support, and when pre-orders became available Linux was listed as a platform, and then removed.

Suddenly we're here. Gauntlet has a release date and can be preordered! http://t.co/yk5HnxzATO pic.twitter.com/7BJ7K5bj9o

We have reached out to the developers who have confirmed it was delayed for Steam Machines:

@gamingonlinux It will not have general support of Linux, but will support the SteamOS Linux when that version becomes available.

— Arrowhead (@arrowheadgs) September 23, 2014

@gamingonlinux Most likely it will come along the Steam Machines, but Warner will also be big part of setting those plans.

— Arrowhead (@arrowheadgs) September 23, 2014

It's a bit of a shame for them to to do that, but they confirmed it's also part of a decision from the publisher:

@gamingonlinux Often it's a discussion and joint decision but the final say is always up to them.

Not general support for linux but steamos it's the same damn thing. So probably some time next year.

I'm not surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. Isn't this the second or third title that Warner wouldn't let release for Linux? I think Warner wants all the AAA titles they publish to wait for the official SteamOS launch to release for Linux.

Yeah, it probably makes more marketing sense or something. "It will not have general support of Linux", now what does that mean? Will there be a switch to only allow pure SteamOS machines?

Not so sure, Valve is implementing more and more modifications to Xorg and linux kernel to have a nice gaming platform. As they said at debconf, these patches will not be upstreamed, so there is chances steamOS ends as a "not so compatible" linux distribution, like android now.

Why did they decide to do that? Is it because their patches are pretty specific and could not be implemented for a general purpose OS (i.e. they would break things) or is it because of proprietary code that they won't share?

Well, I guess that support-wise, they won't handle anything else. Like the fact that Ubuntu is currently targeted as Linux games on Steam for specs, that leads to developer not wanting to handle other distros or specific cases. Or a bit like GOG officially supporting Ubuntu and Mint with installation packages.
In other words, there won't be a switch that would forbid Gauntlet to run on other distros but if people have troubles with the game, the publisher can say "switch to SteamOS, we don't support other distros", even if the issue is trivial or not distro-dependant at all.

Id say that's quite a leap unlike steamos the entire android stack that sits on the kernel is different from most distros. I think some of the things valve is referring to is stuff that makes the entire windows appear in full screen due to it being ment for use on a tv where they don't expect a consumer to have to touch settings.

But then again if it were to happen that would upset allot of people and I doubt valve wants to alienate the linux community and developers.

Regarding supporting Steam OS, do not over think it. These developers and publishers do not know what we know. They most likely just feel more comfortable and familiar with a single platform/OS to test on and support. If you think about it, it is the exact same thing as GOG only officially supporting Ubuntu and Mint.

The only negative thing here is if they mess up with the Steam Runtime or something similar. Then, when you have issues with missing libraries it is suddenly okay, since they never supported anything else. This would of course bite them with future Steam OS updates, especially if they decide to go with image based upgrades.

Btw here is another little thing to make you all happier. If there was to be an OS X version, would now be delayed :)

Mmmm... Wondering if it has something to do with MIR and Ubuntu announced xorg "legacy" support...

Just hypothetical but MIR is coming to Unity (Ubuntu) and Canonical could decide to implement the support for the SteamOS version of Xorg. I might be wrong.

This would explain why Ubuntu is still recommended by Valve for developpers but it would cause à lot of problems to other distros if they intend to drop Xorg in favor of Wayland...
