Insanity's Blade is an interesting mix of old school action and platforming that is now available to buy and play on Linux. They even offer up a demo for us.

Take a father’s journey to hell in order to save the souls of his wife and child. Insanity’s Blade: The Chronicles of Thurstan is the first in a series of games based around the journey of a sword possessed by a fathers powerful grief and hatred. This first game is the tale of the swords creation.
Features
- A blend of action, platforming and RPG elements with a classic Arcade style
- Two-player Co-Op Game play! Play the full story mode as well as other exciting arcade game modes with a friend!
- Multiple game play modes. Along with story mode there will be bonus arcade modes such as Corpse Surfing Competition and Arena Battle to name a few!
- Battle through the 16 stages filled with unique enemies and environments
- Adapted from the Insanity’s Blade graphic novel written by Chris and as featured on the now-defunct WTFmag.ca
- Scale buildings and caves with Thurstan’s wall jumping abilities
- A fully original soundtrack in 16bit as well as an 8bit version that would work on real NES hardware (VRC6 based)
- Cut scenes between stages to tell the story of Insanity’s Blade
- Get upgrades at the store
- Weapons system improvements and upgrades as you progress lead to unique combat mechanics
We actually gave you a preview of Insanity's Blade back in April of this year. Overall we found it to be enjoyable.

And you don't have unlimited continues! But like a modern game we have an automatic save as every level is completed. So you can take a break and come back later and pick it up again!

I had some trouble getting it to run on Linux Mint 17 64 bit. It complained about a missing libudev.so.0 library. I had a libudev package under a different name so I made a link, renamed it accordingly, and got the game to run.
The game itself is kind of a lemon (that's what you Brits say, yeah? ;)). Looks nice (for the most part), but I found the actual gameplay very phoned in. You play a character who can punch, then punch knives from his fists, and then multiple knives from his fists. At this point all weaker enemies will vaporize before you, whereas tougher fellows (such as an Ent built like a monster truck) serve as mobile bullet sponges who can't even attack you because an up-close blow knocks them out of range.
