In a move that will shock many, Mojang has finally confirmed the rumours. Microsoft is buying them out, and so Minecraft & Scrolls will be owned by Microsoft. See their official blog post as the source.
Of course they will be leaving, they will be filthy rich:
It's not the end of the world though, so let's just wait and see what happens to Minecraft development, shall we? Minecraft died out for me a long time ago anyway, as apart from building there really isn't much else to it and that does get boring rather quickly.
Microsoft isn't exactly known for good gaming decisions, though, so anything could happen. I just hope Mojang still get the creative freedom they had under the previous heads.
I wouldn't be surprised if Notch, Carl and Jakob created a new company with all that cash and continued making games.
It could even be that the original heads of Mojang have drifted apart and wanted to move onto something completely new. It happens.
How do you feel about this?
For those looking for an open source alternative Minetest has you covered.
QuoteYes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft.
QuoteThough it’s too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being.
The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

As if it mattered.
There's already, without exaggeration, a dozen or more Minecraft clones and spinoffs. The brand doesn't really mean that much anymore.

I'm pretty sure this is an admission by Microsoft of the failure of Project Sparc.

Oh well! Congratulations Notch for pulling Microsoft over the Table. 2,5 Billion Dollar is just insane xD.
But what will that mean for Minecraft now?
Will we ever see the promised Mod-API or is that off the table now too?
BTW: Didn't Notch promise to release the Source if he looses interest in developing Minecraft? What happened to that? :P

Guess Notch just took $2.5 billion from Microsoft for something they won't be able to do anything with. I would have done the exact same thing in his position.

In my opinion, Microsoft managed it to ruin Banjo Tooie, Age of Empires (ruined Ensemble Studios anyway), and even Windows itself. They fight OpenGL and I hate super big companies anyway. Nothing more to say here. Minecraft is dead for me, mb time to to sell something.
