In a move that will shock many, Mojang has finally confirmed the rumours. Microsoft is buying them out, and so Minecraft & Scrolls will be owned by Microsoft. See their official blog post as the source.
Of course they will be leaving, they will be filthy rich:
It's not the end of the world though, so let's just wait and see what happens to Minecraft development, shall we? Minecraft died out for me a long time ago anyway, as apart from building there really isn't much else to it and that does get boring rather quickly.
Microsoft isn't exactly known for good gaming decisions, though, so anything could happen. I just hope Mojang still get the creative freedom they had under the previous heads.
I wouldn't be surprised if Notch, Carl and Jakob created a new company with all that cash and continued making games.
It could even be that the original heads of Mojang have drifted apart and wanted to move onto something completely new. It happens.
How do you feel about this?
For those looking for an open source alternative Minetest has you covered.
QuoteYes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft.
QuoteThough it’s too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being.
The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

As if it mattered.
There's already, without exaggeration, a dozen or more Minecraft clones and spinoffs. The brand doesn't really mean that much anymore.

well the official minecraft is dead to me now, bring in the clones!

I'm pretty sure this is an admission by Microsoft of the failure of Project Sparc.

Oh well! Congratulations Notch for pulling Microsoft over the Table. 2,5 Billion Dollar is just insane xD.
But what will that mean for Minecraft now?
Will we ever see the promised Mod-API or is that off the table now too?
BTW: Didn't Notch promise to release the Source if he looses interest in developing Minecraft? What happened to that? :P

Guess Notch just took $2.5 billion from Microsoft for something they won't be able to do anything with. I would have done the exact same thing in his position.

In my opinion, Microsoft managed it to ruin Banjo Tooie, Age of Empires (ruined Ensemble Studios anyway), and even Windows itself. They fight OpenGL and I hate super big companies anyway. Nothing more to say here. Minecraft is dead for me, mb time to to sell something.

I actually played Minetest for a bit. It's another open source clone (never bought minecraft), with really cool mods!
If I was one of the creators, of course I'd bail after selling and becoming filthy rich =D
Then probably start a company like SpaceX =P
I don't see the Minecraft game being sustainable (both enjoyment-wise and population-wise) in the long term anyway (think 10 years). Looks like M$ made a stupid move lol, buying Minecraft IP for 2.5bil o.O
Imagine if Star Citizen got that amount of money! (I reckon Star Citizen is a game that *could* be sustainable for over 10 years. The devs are legit community and fan-focused, listening to feedback and creating a game with the biggest scope of all time, becoming the Best Damn Space Sim Ever! (And will probably supersede Tribes 1 as my favourite game of all time.

I wouldn't be surprised if they lock the thing to Windows only and sue anybody that uses that kind of block system so they stop using it... Would not be a never before seen way of doing business for M$$$...

He mentions a really informative video, but I don't suggest reading the comments.

Minecraft is the game that have the best sales on PC and on linux. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#PC
Furthermore, minecraft is the third most sold game in the world.
So I don't understand why Notch ask only 2.5B$, minecraft worth a lot more.

Minecraft vanilla is boring after awhile, that isn't really the point for die hard minecrafters (except maybe the mobile edition?). The modding community is what made minecraft so huge. Even projects like FTB and technic that allowed for complex modding packs without users having to mess with things themselves. Custom servers are also huge, this is terrible news, and ultimately it will not be a positive thing for linux gaming. I suppose its time to look at projects like minetest and terasology, also starbound has a real opportunity to increase its player base.

What I want to know is what Mojang has up it's sleeve that we dont know about. Minecraft cannot be worth that kind of $$.

I'm not a very normal person however so I would try to find ways in which to multiply this amount of money so I could bribe governments into creating some laws and changing existing ones to vastly improve the general quality of life for the lower and middle class folks in that community. Things like reinventing education and re-designing the political system to diminsh corruption and safeguard against falsified data. Things in that general direction.
I do not see how bribing governments with your extreme wealth would equal diminishing corruption since taking bribes is in many ways the height of corruption...
But that is off topic, not that I am terribly bothered with the topic, but anyway...
