In a move that will shock many, Mojang has finally confirmed the rumours. Microsoft is buying them out, and so Minecraft & Scrolls will be owned by Microsoft. See their official blog post as the source.
Of course they will be leaving, they will be filthy rich:
It's not the end of the world though, so let's just wait and see what happens to Minecraft development, shall we? Minecraft died out for me a long time ago anyway, as apart from building there really isn't much else to it and that does get boring rather quickly.
Microsoft isn't exactly known for good gaming decisions, though, so anything could happen. I just hope Mojang still get the creative freedom they had under the previous heads.
I wouldn't be surprised if Notch, Carl and Jakob created a new company with all that cash and continued making games.
It could even be that the original heads of Mojang have drifted apart and wanted to move onto something completely new. It happens.
How do you feel about this?

QuoteYes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft.
QuoteThough it’s too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being.
The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Quoting: GuestI suspect however that they will either separately or together craft a triple A video game company, and enjoy only needing to do the part of game development they enjoy the most while leaving the rest of the work up to others, be that design, programming or storywriting. That's probably what I'd do if I were a normal person.
If you read the notch post about this, he says he doesnt want to be on the spotlight. He intends to do with the money whatever cool project cross his mind... and that he will stop on sight any project that brings him to the spotlight again.

That shouldn't be a problem as any project he works on in the future is going to face heavy scrutiny.

Quoting: GuestDon't forget the merchandising. Minecraft toys are just as overpriced as the game itself. Minecraft is not GPLed. I kinda hope Microsoft buys all the proprietary games. For that matter, they can buy all the GPLed games as well :)
I guess I wasn't counting that. I don't have kids, so I can't say I browse the toy aisle at walmart/target much except a couple of times a year for gifts, and even then I send the GF on those runs most of the time ;). I don't think I have ever seen a Minecraft toy or collectible though. I admit my opinion is probably skewed by the fact that I don't play it, I tried, didn't get the fascination. Was just a game with not really any sense of direction and horrid graphics to me. Just no matter how I think about it though.. $2.5B? That's a lot of $$ for a "one hit wonder" studio with an arguably dieing product. Not to say there are not many people still playing it.. I'm sure their monthly sales have taken a nose dive though. Especially with all the free/cheaper clones out there. There has to be something else there.

I still don't know what to think about all this. It's kind of sad though. It's not the end of the world. But I can't imagine that something good will come out of it. I only hope that I will be able to continue playing the game as it is right now.

"What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed?
There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop."
Is there a reason why Linux isn't mentioned here?

On one hand you could say "PC/Mac" includes Windows, Linux and Mac. On the other hand though Microsoft doesn't have much in the way of monetary incentive to keep MC4Linux alive at this point in time, we are small right now after all. Really it has every reason to kill it from their point of view.
So, should hey kill it, does MC play well with wine? WineHQ's reports are all over the place.

Good for Mojang. This is a great move. They accomplished much with Minecraft, I hope they use their newfound riches for something open source and cool. And even if they don't, it's gotta feel good te finally cash in.

Ah Microsoft, always an unerring eye for the next big thing and how to be cool.
What do you think: Should I buy a Windows phone because of Minecraft or rather an Oculus Rift, just because?

I can't blame them. A lot can be done with that money, and I'm sure Notch never anticipated his game getting so crazy popular. Now he can move on to other projects and perhaps have some stress lifted from his shoulders.
I'm certainly glad Minecraft existed. It had an effect on my life, perhaps a bit indirectly. If it wasn't for Minecraft, I wouldn't have had that wonderful experience, early in my college years, writing plugins for a Minecraft Classic server. I could have graduated a Physics major, instead, if it weren't for that. So, thank you Mr. Persson.
The next few years are going to be interesting, if only to see how Microsoft intends to make back the $2.5 billion.
Edit: clarification
