Project Vaulderie is a project that aims to recreate the Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines game to Unity. The goals we try to achieve with this tremendous effort are many. First and foremost is fixing a lot of bugs and glitches which can’t be fixed by normal fan made patches simply because they are caused by the protected executables and the Alpha state of Source Engine used by the game. Secondly, taking advantage of new features available in Unity engine as well of the new development toolkit planned along with it that allows anyone to mod it. Third, updating the game to up to date graphics and technology.

Bloodlines Resurgence was originally the project that aimed to recreate the game in Source engine. Due to the nature on how Source works the attempt of porting to Source was tremendous and strenuous for our team. After seeing the incident with Dear Esther with porting their game to Unity, gave us enough reason to remove the skepticism regarding Unity not being the perfect substitute engine. The source port, Bloodlines Resurgence, has been discontinued regarding the recent communication with White Wolf and in favor for the switch to Unity.

Our intention is to bring the best possible version of Bloodlines that many have dreamed for a very long time now. We've chosen Unity for a lot of reason, both benefiting for our production needs and to deliver the expectations for this rather ambitious project. We're be focusing on the single player aspect of the game, but in the mean time we also implement multiplayer support from the beginning as we go, to remove any issues that would appear later on. It will have modding support but any current mod will require to be converted to properly work (including maps).

Current plans for the project:
Windows, Mac and Linux builds, including 64-bit support
Improved graphical assets, shaders and DX11 support
Implement proper real-time shadow rendering and deferred lighting
Storyteller mode, in the spirit of Redemption
Revamped disciplines system
Multiple character profiles, meaning you can play between characters without interfering with each other
Each hub map now have the building interiors integrated, eliminating waiting time
Proper dialog system, with more in-depth facial expression
Level editor and other modding tools to create new mods or alter the current game

Long term plans:
Multiplayer between Camarilla, Society of Leopold, Kuei-Jin and the Sabbat
Integrated with Steamworks for achievements and storing contents online
Full character customization, from customizing outfits to body parts
Full co-op support for single player campaigns

Wow, this is great news. Man how I loved that game, the world and atmosphere therein.
VtM:Bloodlines is one game I've always wanted a sequel to. This will be a great revisit while I wait for that sequel. I'll never give up hope.

about the legal issues this is from the FAQ of the website:

What about legal permission and copyright issues?
As White Wolf/CCP Games didn’t technically given us the green light nor that we couldn’t proceed, they’ve only said permission would be given by Activision. We’ve also heard contrary information from a Valve Greenlight representative, including our own personal attempt to contact Activision’s legal department for permission, only to be redirected to the terms of use agreement, which only states we must get permission from Activision. To clarify any situation, we are not planning on releasing this project for free nor as a commercial release, which is not our intention. Our intention is simply to bring the best version of Bloodlines, along with proper modding support, graphical enhancements and improved mechanism where needed.
Our plan includes of releasing the game once it’s completed, both as a standalone build and as a Greenlight title, being part of Steam’s integration. You will be required to own a copy of the game in order to install any given versions, as some contents are mandatory to be converted in order for the game to work. We will update this section soon for further detail.

Sounds like Steam only plans. Not very encouraging.

Following this quite a time now ... great project!

@BillNyeTheBlackGuy: they won't shut it down. It's a community project not deploying any IP on their own but the project will require VTM:BL installed / bought on steam to work, which will cover the IP issue since everyone using the port will have to aquire the original game. Any lawyer would have a rough ride to bring a game "visually improved" where you bought the usage right of the original game to curt. White Wolf / CCP / Activision will see that as free cash rather than an issue to sue.

If it's steam only - I couldn't care less. Of course they need to prevent being sued and try to prevent people playing it without having the original game (and within that bought the usage right on the IP). Maybe on long-term we'll see a deal with the owner of the IP, at the moment it seems the only legit option.

Ok, that makes sense. Would be nice if they found a way to distribute it DRM free to though. The original isn't on any DRM free digital stores that I can find though, otherwise they could have made it a requirement to own the original before being able to download the remake.

You can buy the original on disk on E-bay for quite reasonable prices. So I wonder if that can satisfy their requirements for a DRM-free copy of their remake.

Yeah, but how would they verify that you own a genuine, legally acquired copy?

No idea. The whole concept of DRM is a fallacy and this case just demonstrates it. If they really want it, may be people can provide them with a scan of the CD cover which should have some unique ID or whatever.
