We recently had a chance to speak to Techland the original developers of the Dead Island series, but they have confirmed they are no longer involved with it. This isn't to say it suddenly isn't coming, as it seems they haven't been involved in the Linux work at all.

QuoteTechland is not involved with the Dead Island series anymore. Please direct all questions to the publisher: Deep Silver.

Kind regards,

When asked about if they knew anything more:
QuoteOf course Techland remains the original developer of Dead Island but we don't work on that IP anymore. Currently, we're developing two titles: Hellraid and Dying Light. Any questions regarding Dead Island are to be directed to the publisher.

The question then remains who exactly is working on the Linux version? It's being worked on regularly as ~5 hours ago it gained another new build in the "linux_test" encrypted branch on SteamDB.

Virtual Programming did the Mac version using their eON technology, but no one from anywhere is confirming who is doing it. The publisher Deep Silver sadly hasn't responded to our requests for comments. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Is it being done by volunteers?

I thought it was the eON guys, but I would like to see a native port.

I cannot say I am encouraged by this piece of news.

please no eON please no eON please no eON..........

Okay, since still nobody else have said it, I will. I downloaded the game (missing executable), several weeks ago.

I cannot confirm anything, but the files you get look a lot like the ones you get with the eON wrapped The Witcher 2. I think we can quite safely assume that they let VP do it for Linux when they did it for Mac.

I pray the gods you're wrong.
Putting up with that piece of crapware once was largely enough for this lifetime. :/

You guys must be living under a rock. eON has matured quite well and is now able to run the witcher 2 almost flawlessly. I understand eON's launch was shady, but things have changed...for the better. +1 to using eON for future ports.

Please explain to me why I should accept ports with eON, while i can use wine.
Edit*: Just checked reddit reddit. As long as the performance is as good or even better as on windows they can use eON.

Mature or not, it's still a WRAPPER. It's still as bad as Wine (used for an OFFICIAL port, I mean - Wine isn't a bad piece of software and has its uses, but... Oh whatever, this has already been discussed to death, hasn't it? :)). It's still crapware. If I want to run something non-native, I can do it by myself, thank you very much, and I then CHOOSE to throw my money at a developer who CLEARLY states he does NOT support my operating system.

I am quite pleased with Witcher 2 port. I will be happy to see an eON port of Dead Island. I'm not a gaming purist; if I get the convenience of launching and playing a game on Linux without having to jump through wine hoops, I'll galdly pay for that.

I see eON as an easy way for publishers to port to Linux, and a Linux-gaming-training wheel. If we (Linux gamers) keep buying Linux games, then eventually they will either improve eON so much that it really doesn't matter or they will start developing for Linux. We still have a lot to prove, as a market. Before, they wouldn't even talk to us, but now at least there is a conversation.

tl;dr who cares, just take my money and give me Linux games.
