The Witcher 2 was released on GOG for Linux recently for DRM free fans, but sadly it was an older version that the GOG team put up. With all the performance improvements in the new versions it was needing an update. GOG have contacted us to let us know a patch is now available. Looks like the team at GOG need to get a little bit better at communicating with developers they work with so that this doesn't happen again.
I still think it's fantastic how far the Linux version has come in such a short amount of time. This bodes well for future Linux games to come from Virtual Programming.
Check out The Witcher 2 on GOG now.
How are you finding The Witcher 2 with the latest beta improvements? I hope there is more to come to make it fully playable at 1920x1080 on my 560ti, but at least it's now playable at 1280x720 on high settings for me, as originally i couldn't even run it at low settings.

The VP guys deserve mad props for the work they have done. It's really a great port now.

I messed my W2 installation when I "applied" the patch.
What I did wrong was decompress the patch contents directly to the game folder.
No. The patch must be decompressed in a separated folder and then run the executable in it.
Still, the performance is disapointing.

I was happy ever since they fixed the input lag on one of their big patches after a period of nothing (probably 2 patches ago on steam). I mean although I never tried using WINE on it, it worked and looked good with eON after that patch. =) It's good to have supported ports, even with compatibility layers like WINE, because it means updates from paid professionals will fix things (and not require fan support via winehq/PlayOnLinux)! I'm guessing this is where GOG Linux support is stepping up. =D

Are there any benchmarks comparing this port to the Windows version running under Windows and Wine?

It works quite well for me at 1920 x 1200 with GTX 680 on max settings with ubersampling off (besides a few glitches like crash on exit and a bit weird warnings in the log which I reported in the bug tracker).
I don't see any major performance difference with Wine + CSMT. I never played it on Windows, so can't compare with that.
If anyone has audio missing in the dialogs, it's a known but with the configurator. See https://github.com/KillaW0lf04/The-Witcher-2-Issues/issues/59

Not being able to deliver their magnificent support was used as an excuse to not deliver linux binaries on gog earlier. This shows that was just talk, as expected.

What are you talking about? The game was in alpha / beta status until very recently. GOG doesn't run beta programs, they only sell releases.

It wasn't the old version without performance improvements.
The part that was missing, was the one that was officially added on Friday on Steam.

The first Witcher is also 80% off now.

Correct, but this one isn't available on Linux, right? Or is there any FOSS implementation I'm not aware of?

It is available on Linux through Wine. Arguably, it's not any worse than using eON or any other way of translating Direct3D into OpenGL, especially if it works well.

Fair enough. :)

For those asking, it's pretty much what it was on wine + CSMT patch now in the native version. Though, playing it on Windows7 I get out a better performance than in Linux - I still get about 20 % better performance in Windows, which is not a big deal though if you play with 40 or 48 fps ;-).
