The Witcher 2 For Linux Released On GOG

By -
tagline-image
The Witcher 2 for Linux is now fully DRM-free and available to buy from GOG, but be warned the GOG team accidentally put up an older version.

Our contact at VP who did the port let us know GOG are aware of it and will issue an update soon, so no need to fret. Looks like GOG dropped the ball on this one, but it should all be sorted soon.

If you haven't seen it yet, see our recent post on the latest beta of The Witcher 2. The performance difference between this first release and the current beta are awesome. Well done to VP for sticking at it and turning it around.

You can also see the announcement from VP on the unofficial TW2 github:

We see that GOG.com have chosen to release The Witcher 2 for Linux on their store. Unfortunately, they did not have the latest version before publishing.

As they have packaged the game as one huge download, we decided that as well as sending them the latest build, we would make the new files available for public download. You can download them here:

Nice link to Witcher 2 on GOG =)
Unfortunately since I already have it on Steam and aren't loaded, I think I'll pass on supporting GOG on this one.

Thanks for that! I was waiting for GoG version as I own physical Witcher 2 CE (+GoG) and don't have Steam version. VP port is not allowing me to play with acceptable performance on GF 9800 GTX+ (yes, I know it's kinda old card, but I get stable 60 FPS on High on Windows) unfortunatelly. I'm looking forward to threading improvements. It would be great from VP if they still share new delta packages (with beta fixes) to GoG people.

It seems that here, and if you have valid game keys, you can get a GOG copy of both the first and second Witcher. A friend told me that the link worked for his steam versions(never tried it, I bought the games again).

If you own the steam version, you can move the CD key to gog.com and then you get access to all versions.

They work. I backed up both Witcher 1 and 2 from Steam to my GOG account.

I have them both 1 and 2 on GOG and Steam because of the Witcher Backup thing too.

Just installed the GOG release and the patch from VP. It runs great with everything on max and Ubersampling disabled (using Nvidia Geforce GTX 680). But I didn't test it extensively yet.

If you have the Steam version already, GOG offers you the game for free: https://secure.gog.com/witcher/backup

Be careful !!!

If you download the game directly by your account, it's the same way than Windows when you download the game without GoG downloader -> The download is very very slow

The solution is to use lgogdownloader which use the GOG API :
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/lgogdownloader_gogdownloader_for_linux/page1

lgogdownloader package exist for Archlinux, Debian Wheezy and Ubuntu.

For example, to download the French Linux version of TW2 :
lgogdownloader --download --no-extras --platform 4 --language 4 --limit-rate 2000 --game the_witcher_2

--platform 4 = Linux
--language 4 = French

More explanations with "man lgogdownloader"

It was very slow with lgogdownloader for me yesterday as well. Today it's better.
