Tropico 5 has finally been officially release for Linux, so it's time to become a dictator and see how it runs on Linux.
This is the first game in the Tropico 5 series to be official supported on Linux, so be sure to pick up a copy to show your support.
My Initial Thoughts
I've played around with it for a bit now and it's a pretty fun game that is amplified by the possibility of multiplayer. It will have a few rough edges being a brand new port, so I am willing to overlook minor niggles for now.
It does have a few issues like alt+tab seemed to crash it for me, and setting post-processing to "high" makes the game turn blue. The alt+tab issue is highly annoying, as it only seemed to crash doing it once, so just a teething issue.
When launching the campaign and customizing my dictator I also don't seem to get any preview, just a box with features to change and a black screen behind it, so I assume there should be a changing face there of some sort.
My game-pad seems to be picked up properly and makes playing it on my big screen from across the room a pleasure. Although one minor issue with the game-pad is it wouldn't let me save the game, it's supposed to let you press A, but it wouldn't pick it up, but pressing ENTER on the keyboard seemed to work fine.
I seem to be a terrible dictator with a really bad habit over spending money I don't have, and I don't think his majesty approves of my bank breaking methods. I just wanted to grow lots of crops...
If you like city building with a bit of comedy and just being a little different be sure to check it out.

Quoting: neokivaI am going to buy this i am so sick of hearing the only 1 or 2 % marketshare (not to mention those surveys either have errors or biased) argument used to justify mmos and other decent games not coming to linux. guys if you can please pay full price. this will benefit us and others in the future.
You are right of course. Plus, this *is* a game with a decent review score. So I bought it now.

EDIT* still a good plugin to have, but this particular game at DLgamer is not a steam key, it is a retail key. They do provide the game to download but is only for windows it seems. Guess I got screwed on that one. Live and learn to pay more attention lol. Hopefully they will refund me, but I'm not holding my breath.
GreenManGaming does have a 15% off voucher (QRJ1I6-2SSDU0-LN9UUG) that will work for it though and it IS steam, I made sure this time ;) at least if I don't get a refund from DLgamer, some my $$ to them will (hopefully) goto a dev who does linux games. *gotta look on the bright side sometimes*

QuoteThe game is $13.99(US) @ dlgamer.us for anyone interested.
Are you sure that's not just a Windows download? Can't find any mention of a Steam key and don't know what a Kalypso Launcher key is or whether their launcher even works on Linux.

Quoting: jsa1983Is it working well with the mesa drivers? Just wanted to know, but I guess I'll be able to give it a try it later today.
I can answer myself just in case someone is interested. The game runs ok with mesa (radeonsi in my case), but only if you set MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.0 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=400 %command% as launch options. For some reason the OpenGL 3.3 codepath only shows a black screen (music playing in the background, so it's not a crash).

Hey guys DLGamer granted me a refund QUICKLY and without problem, so I give their customer support a HUGE thumbs up! For the future though, they do have steam keys for a lot of things, just make sure on the game page you are looking at that it says DRM: Steam.
Edit* also they just emailed me back
"in the basis of your comments We're going to add Logo Linux For Compatible Game"
I take that to mean they are going to look into getting a linux version up on their site and also start putting a linux logo on linux compatible games from them. So I guess something good came form my whoops! :D

Damn, you got my hopes there :p. seems like a pretty decent site, would be good if they start doing Linux soon.
Guess I'll have to wait a bit for tropico, maybe next month if there's no sale by then. Spent way too much on games recenly and still haven't got through some of the summer sale stuff, keep getting distracted with new games.

Yea, sorry about that :S: I got excited too. I like games, but I like to not be broke either, so I am always looking for the best deals possible. That's the first time the Enhanced Steam plugin had led me to that particular site. Knowing that not all of their games are steam keys, and how helpful their customer service was I will still check them out for deals, ill just pay a little more attention now.
