Banished is a city-builder from Shining Rock Software LLC that was praised rather a lot when it came out, and the developer noted they planned a Linux version. We caught up with the developer to see when.

Back in April the developer noted on the official blog they were planning a Linux version, but with no word since July we shot off an email and got a great reply:
QuoteHey Liam,

Sorry for my late reply - been working on getting mod support for the game done so I can move onto other platforms. I plan on starting OSX and Linux builds next week - not sure how long they'll take.

I'll be updating the dev log as I go, so you'll definitely see updates.

That's very positive and I cannot wait to keep up with the developments. I have been eagerly awaiting a Linux port of Banished after seeing my twitter feed rammed full of people loving it. The Steam reviews are positive too, so it looks like another fantastic game coming our way.

Official About
In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travellers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.

The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough—there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own. I bought it back when it came out, hoping to play it on Wine until the port came out (it was rumored back then, but only if the game did well financially). It's definitely nice to see the developer hasn't abandoned the port.
I really like the game, it's quite relaxing actually. I've only played a few hours of it but hope to pick it up again when it "goes native".

It's a good city builder but the survival elements get so stressful. You can get to 300 or so citizens pretty quickly but at that point, you need a ton of food production. One long winter will stall out your crops, leading to a bad harvest, or an early winter you lose most of them before you can harvest. And then so many people starve.

People freeze to death if you don't have enough firewood, houses get cramped if you don't keep up with population expansion well (which isn't great if you get a disease going through your village), you can run out of materials quickly so you need to keep up with that, and you need to watch storage space as your village grows and try to put it somewhere convenient for the villagers to get what they need quickly.

But as hard as it is, it's very good.

I've had my eye on this one for a while now, so glad to see they're porting it!

That game looks awesome and it's a nice change from what we have usually played with city building games such as SimCity. Given EA's greed and evil plans for SimCity, it's great to see other city building games like this one plus Cities Skyline.

Great game. Excellent to see that it will get a native Linux port as well. Purchased it some time ago and I'm so glad that it runs flawlessly using Wine.
Should anyone be interested, then GOG version of Banished only requires the following packages to be installed in your Wine prefix:
GDI+
directx

Or easier yet, should you have Crossover Linux, you can simply use this tie to get it working:
https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=12663
Just make sure that you have installed GDI+ in your bottle. Otherwise the installer would appear as a black box. GDI+ tie can be found here:

I've read a lot of articles that this game runs very well under wine, however my main concern is that if I purchase it now it will go down as a windoze purchase, reducing the (already possibly small) impact which the Linux release will have. I was about to give up and simply buy it, but now that this post has appeared I'm going to wait. I know that we are a small number compared to the other OSes, however I want to make sure that when I purchase a game I am waving my Linux flag high, so I want my purchase to count as a Linux user.

I bought the GOG version of Banished and installed in the Wine prefix: GDI+ directx but I have no sound in game. Thanks for any help.
