Civilization: Beyond Earth is coming to Linux and the Linux release has been cleared up a bit in terms of when we can expect it.

Russ Looney of Aspyr Media (<3) who will be porting the game and who also run the GameAgent store confirmed it on their official blog:
QuoteYou knew it was coming, and now it’s official from Aspyr Media: Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth is coming to both Mac and Linux!

QuoteThe Mac version will be launching on both Steam and the Mac App Store this holiday season with the Linux version following on Steam close behind.

Not exactly a solid date, but it's great to see it really won't be very far behind. Aspyr Media have been up to rather a lot for us recently haven't they!

When they say Holiday season that will most likely be December at an educated guess.

You can pre-order it now from GameAgent for the Linux version and support Aspyr Media. You also support GamingOnLinux by using and buying from that link. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I had assumed that there would be months between the Windows and Linux releases, although deep down I'd hoped it would only be weeks. The reference to "holiday season" suggests at minimum after US Thanksgiving, seems to lean towards the latter.

I am saddened to be correct in my assumption.

Banished, Transistor and Banner Saga are pretty far up there in the "we're working on Linux, really!" club.

I can kinda understand with these one or two person shops, but wow.

It would be interesting to know why it takes long time to port games for Linux; are the tools bad, lack of experience with OpenGL, performance issues, etc.

As we have seen even bigger companies has been struggling with performance on Linux - Borderlands, Tropico 5, etc.
