Dead Island Zombie Game Now Available On Linux For Some (updated)

By anchor -
Update: It should now be playable for all, and it is a native port.
Update 2: Virtual Programming have confirmed to GamingOnLinux in an email they did not do the port, so to settle this, it is not using eON.

We honestly have no idea who has done this port, as GamingOnLinux spoke to Techland previously who confirmed they are not doing the port and told us to speak to Deep Silver who never answer our emails or tweets.

Dead Island is the latest zombie game to grace Linux with its presence and helps build up our backlog of games.

About
Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.

It seems it is not available for everyone just yet, so you may get a missing executable error:
QuoteFor most wondering why they still get missing executable: it is waiting for Techland to include the Linux files in all the various packages they have sold over the years.
If you bought https://store.steampowered.com/sub/14664/ or https://store.steampowered.com/sub/15205/ you can download it.

Thanks, johndrinkwater on reddit.

It is currently on sale too, so it's possibly it was supposed to be sorted ready for the sale.

Editor Note: We do advise holding off until the official announcement to avoid waiting and to be sure you count as a Linux sale. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

The penguin/tux logo has been added to the game and the available DLC. :)

Not working yet, some ppl are saying on community hub forums that it is working if you bought the GOTY edition, but this is not my case, I bought them separately

Missing Executable here for me in the UK as well, not bothered as I'm having a blast with the Borderlands games at the moment. :D

Downloading the game now.

Got given a free copy of Dead Island Pandemic (worth $20), did anyone else get this? It's not on Linux, so I don't really care much for it.. But when they port it I guess i'll be interested.

Still missing executables, I really hope they don't do something similar to Metro and force ppl to "re-buy" the same game...

Very pleased to see more Linux games being released. I make it a point to buy many of them on my Steam machine, especially if they are on sale. I may not play it as often as I would like, but I'm hoping by doing so I show up as an additional Linux sale. I especially buy them if they are on sale!

How is pirating okay when the company producing the product has nothing to do with it not being allowed? That logic is flawed in so many ways I can't even express them all.

Which other alternative is left except proxy.

Doesn't launch for me either, hope they fix it soon. Also Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet released on Linux today, definitely a good buy.

WoW, this game is not available in Germany.

Any idea how to get it?

The steampage just says "Not available for your country"

Fack Germany government. seriously. Im 20 years old and they treat me like a baby.

You cant buy it... but can you accept a gift?
Styromaniac Oct 24, 2014
If it's not available in your country and region lock bypasses get your account banned, then the moral police have no say. It would strictly be a matter of law, not morals. Even if you threw hundreds of dollars at the screen, at best you get your account banned.

I don't pirate, but this is plain common sense. Laws =/= morals, nobody will be deprived of his/her money if they pirate a game they are strictly forbidden from buying anyway.

Game developers might agree with this as the exception to immorality, but laws, publishers and lawyers will of course disagree.

Oh God, I am sorry for bringing up the piracy debate here. There's no reason to argument against it - they will refuse to accept reason no matter how it is explained.

It's just sad to see it in the Linux community. Somehow I like to think we are better than that. I'll prefer to keep living with that illusion.

To those who can't buy it because of region. I *THINK* you can have it gifted to you from someone who can buy it. Pretty sure I have read that before. It could be possible to purchase a key elsewhere (ebay maybe) and enter it into steam yourself or give the key to someone you trust to turn around and gift it to you. Don't know if steam will block you from entering in your own key or not. Lastly if you get region blocked in other places other than Steam and you don't want to use a proxy on your steam account, you could use a proxy and some form of prepaid card (not purchased from Germany obviously) to buy it elsewhere to get a key and try to activate it on steam.

Those are just ideas going though my head.. I think the gifting thing is the easiest way though. Just make sure it's someone you trust not to take your money and run =/

I noticed the linux depot had been opened up last night and tried to download it again and got the missing executable error still.. and it is still not updating for me. Mine is just the normal Dead Island (NOT GOTY). I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. I think it's ridiculous it has been opened up to some but not others though.
Caldazar Oct 24, 2014
Oh please Beamboom, don't be *that* bigotted guy!
MaximB Oct 24, 2014
Hello,
Does anyone know if "Dead Island Riptide" will be available for Linux too?
I'm thinking about buying the bundle while it's on sale.
Segata Sanshiro Oct 24, 2014
Got the missing executable too...

It's a mystery to me how devs release ports for these big AAA games and they never work for the first couple of days. It's not like I'm using Puppy Linux or anything either, this is Xubuntu 14.04 - on which the game is supposed to have been tested.

Oh well, hopefully in the next few days it should be fixed.

Just bought that GOTY pack and having "missing executable" :C

Yea, It's quite ridiculous IMO. The subject has been brought up with the Dead Island devs by our own GOL twitter acct HOURS ago and no response as of last time I looked. So they KNOW they need to update all of the packages and still have not done it. I'm only guessing here, but I assume it would take minutes to do so. I am beginning to feel like it is a cash grab hoping people who already own it will repurchase a currently working version to play. If that is the case then shame on them.
