Dead Island Zombie Game Now Available On Linux For Some (updated)

By anchor -
Update: It should now be playable for all, and it is a native port.
Update 2: Virtual Programming have confirmed to GamingOnLinux in an email they did not do the port, so to settle this, it is not using eON.

We honestly have no idea who has done this port, as GamingOnLinux spoke to Techland previously who confirmed they are not doing the port and told us to speak to Deep Silver who never answer our emails or tweets.

Dead Island is the latest zombie game to grace Linux with its presence and helps build up our backlog of games.

About
Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.

It seems it is not available for everyone just yet, so you may get a missing executable error:
QuoteFor most wondering why they still get missing executable: it is waiting for Techland to include the Linux files in all the various packages they have sold over the years.
If you bought https://store.steampowered.com/sub/14664/ or https://store.steampowered.com/sub/15205/ you can download it.

Thanks, johndrinkwater on reddit.

It is currently on sale too, so it's possibly it was supposed to be sorted ready for the sale.

Editor Note: We do advise holding off until the official announcement to avoid waiting and to be sure you count as a Linux sale. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

The game plays really well, and it's some good, silly fun.

The only problem I have with it is the auto-equip. If you hold the pick-up key fore more than 0.1 (!!) seconds, whatever you're trying to pick up becomes your active item, and your currently active item is either dropped, or put into your inventory.

Fortunately there's a fix, but it means editing files in a .pak (zip file), which means they'll likely be overridden if there's an update and/or you verify cache integrity. Boo.

actually you dont have to edit files in .pak
you just extract the needed file out of it and change it and mark read-only

i did this with FoV settings

./Steam/SteamApps/common/Dead Island/DI/out/Data/Skills/default_levels.xml

its important the structure is correct in the ./DI/out/ folder like it was in the archive.

works great but default FoV is nasty as hell.. i get motion sick pretty fast
also whats up with the huge blooooooom....

<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rYY5lNY9Q3M" data-youtube-id="rYY5lNY9Q3M"></iframe>

FoV can be changed from Data0.pak -> Data/Skills/default_levels.xml

<prop n="CameraDefaultFOV" v="62.5/&gt;

thats the default crap...no wonder why it makes me sick!

now by doing this editing...im not sure if i can get VAC banned by this.

Apparently is safe, check this - https://twitter.com/Steam_Support/status/113010796128243712

From what you know "it is native"? Can anybody explain?

Virtual Programming lists Dead Island on their web page: http://www.vpltd.com

While this might be just related to the Mac version, couldn't it just be they try hard to make an eON "port" less obvious?

What do you see? whats the problem?

It started windowed with a very weird resolution for me (1280x1500 and i have 2 1280x1024 monitors). In my first try i couldnt changed it to full screen... but then I noticed that I had to press right on the option to turn it on

Silly mistake, but its worth a try :P

@German users, just use a VPN to order your copy. The well respected AirVPN (I use them myself) starts at just €1 and then there's the newly launched FrootVPN which is free.
Thank you so much, you really helped me out here. You can get amazon ec2 access for 12 month free.
  • sudo apt-get install tinyproxy

  • tunnel ssh

  • Add proxy to firefox

  • Buy it from the Steam Store

  • You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, we may terminate your access to your Account.

Just curious, can we rule out a Winelib approach?

It even got a Gold/Platinum rating:

actually you dont have to edit files in .pak

That's good to know, thanks for the tip! ^_^

Talking about editing out some "features"...
Disable that annoying motion blur in "varlist_blur_camera_motion.scr"
    VarFloat("f_blur_camera_motion_factor", 0.0)
    VarFloat("f_blur_camera_motion_near", 0.0)
    VarFloat("f_blur_camera_motion_far", 0.0)
    VarFloat("f_blur_camera_motion_max", 0.0)

I went through the binary using a hex editor and there aren't any mentions of VP, eON or Wine for that matter. So I believe it's safe to say it's a native port.

The credits file (found in the Data3.pak) mentions three people for Linux support: Tomasz Wachowski, Rafał Wróbel, Wojciech Zeler. Rafał Wróbel's LinkedIn profile says he worked in Techland doing Linux game porting. So I guess Techland made the port after all, even though they told us they weren't working on the game anymore: http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/the-dead-island-linux-port-is-not-being-done-by-the-orginal-developers.4313

I believe the mystery is solved now.

Not finding any of those potential strings does not mean anything AFAIK.
They could have just stripped some object files of the build, right?

blur is not that bad...but thanks for this..

i managed to hack bloom shaders ..and eventually even disabled it... but then multiplayer games started to mismatch version... so i have to live with this awful bloom :(
