Last week Zachtronics, the developer of SpaceChem and Infiniminer, announced their upcoming game Infinifactory. Infiniminer is known as the game that inspired Minecraft and this upcoming game looks like it will draw elements from both SpaceChem and Infiniminer.

Infiniminer has been almost completely overshadowed by the hugely popular Minecraft but played an important role in the history of the latter as this notch quote shows:

Quote[...] then I found Infiniminer. My god, I realized that that was the game I wanted to do. I played it in multiplayer for a while and had a blast, but found it flawed. Building was fun, but there wasn’t enough variation, and the big red/blue blocks were pretty horrible. I thought a fantasy game in that style would work really really well, so I tried to implement a simple first person engine in that style [...]

The factory puzzle genre, though seemingly obscure, seems to have had something of a resurgence in popularity lately. Last year saw the release of Great Permutator, which was released on Steam last month and currently in alpha Factorio is already gaining a strong following. Both games are available for Linux and hopefully Infinifactory will be too.

Official About

Infinifactory is an upcoming sandbox puzzle game by Zachtronics, the creators of SpaceChem and Infiniminer. Build factories that assemble products for your alien overlords, and try not to die in the process.

Coming to Steam Early Access in late 2014!

  • LIKE SPACECHEM… IN 3D! Design and run factories in a first-person, fully 3D environment.
  • HISTOGRAMS ARE BACK! Optimize your solutions, and then optimize them more when you see how much better your friends did.
  • VISIT EXOTIC ALIEN LOCALES! Explore a story-driven campaign with 30+ puzzles, audio logs, and more.
  • BLOCKS THAT MOVE! Go beyond the campaign and push the limits of Infinifactory’s next-generation block engine in the sandbox.
  • STEAM WORKSHOP INTEGRATION! Create, share, and play custom puzzles on Steam Workshop.

Confirmation:

@Fleskesvor That's the plan! Windows when we first start early access, and then OS X and Linux shortly thereafter.

A big fan of platformers, puzzle games, point-and-click adventures and niche indie games.

I run the Hidden Linux Gems group on Steam, where we highlight good indie games for Linux that we feel deserve more attention.

I thought so too until I looked into it a bit. I've never played Infiniminer myself but Infinifactory looks interesting. At least until Factocraft pops up. ;)
