About the Game:

The Europa Universalis series covers nearly 400 (1444-1820) years of history wherein a player is able to pick any country at any point in the timeline and lead it to glory. The game features colonization, trade, diplomacy, war and the very many religious conflicts of the time period and lets players rewrite history as they see fit. This is the largest expansion for EU IV yet and includes many interesting features. Some of the more notable additions in Art of War include options for vassal management with the ability to designate specific vassals as marches, making them pay no taxes but provide bonuses in warfare. Additionally, it revamps the Protestant Reformation, making its spread less random and more about geopolitics and education. And, of course, the expansion also adds dozens of events for both Europe and the rest of the world.

As with all internally-developed Paradox games, the expansion comes with a free patch for everyone. There are exciting changes that include 900 new provinces, giving the rest of the world much-needed love, as well as a better rebel mechanic. Trade is also something that benefits in the free patch, with the inclusion of more resources and more trade nodes so that enterprising players can dominate the game economically. Further optimizations should make the game run as fast or faster so those with older computers will be able to deal with the added content. See the rest of the free features and paid features here.

All of the newer internally-developed Paradox games run well on Linux and if you're looking to jump into these engrossing strategy games, the series are often 75% off on Steam and elsewhere. You can get Art of War directly from Paradox's webshop and get a Steam key or through Steam.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

The game is a bit slower then before, but the changes are everywhere from "what?" to "awesome!!".

Norway is great fun to play as always, another 500hours into this game ahead I fear!

Well, I guess it's a good time to give EU4 another chance (not going to get the expansion, but I see there's a number of changes in the patches). A lot of its mechanics (like Leader Mana) were awful, making EU3: Divine Wind (with Magna Mundi mod in particular) much preferable. Perhaps they've addressed those issues at least a bit.

I've yet to play properly CKII: Charlemagne but this is also on the agenda, probably for December(ish). Hopefully Paradox would have cleared any major bugs by then. Unfortunately their expansions tend to be somewhat broken on release - Charlemagne was just another confirmation of that.

yeah I was looking forward to playing Charlemagne, thought now would be a good time to turn an anglo-saxon Kingdom into some kind of Norse powerhouse.

Problem is, they have some massive issues with new patch and smp systems. So you have to go single threaded, game is no longer fun to play cos of it. Also they renamed Norse religion to Germanic :(.

I miss being Norse/Norse.

Art of War is virtually bug-free compared to most of their major releases. I haven't encountered anything in my few hours played and the forums seem mostly subdued. There was a multiplayer bug that's been hotfixed but that's about it I think.

Charlemagne had a rocky launch but they fixed most of the issues that I cared about in the beta patch about two days afterwards. Which isn't ideal, but hey, sadly better than what a lot of devs do these days. It's always worth it to scan the forums first before buying anything anyhow.
