GOG Officially Confirm Their Galaxy Client For Linux, Plus More News

By Andrew -

GOG ran a Twitch live stream where they talked about the future of GOG and their Galaxy client. The main news is that they officially confirmed a Linux version!

They are also now giving away Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 to anyone who signs up, but that's not likely for Linux. This will be a stress-test for the online component of Galaxy. It may be worth trying it out in Wine if you can't hold off for a Linux-compatible game to come out with Galaxy support.

Another tidbit is this:

On-line multiplayer support for classic games planned as GOG Galaxy feature- confirmed on http://t.co/kDEFgFhA0K

It will be interesting to see what Linux-compatible classics are able to use this when Galaxy launches and I can't wait to see!

They also reached 100 Linux games on their store, woo! They added a bunch of new and classic games to the collection with Linux support, nice. I look forward to re-playing the classic Baldur's Gate 2 Complete.

I doubt AvP will be for Linux any time soon (if ever); quoting the AvP page ( http://www.gog.com/game/aliens_versus_predator_classic_2000 ):

Alien Versus Predator Classic 2000 has been updated to run on modern PCs and laptops using DirectX 9.

I have one question: if I buy the game on GOG I can get a key for Steam?
sonic Oct 15, 2014
kido: No, it is not like Humble Bundle. But with Galaxy you should be able to play with your Steam friends:
"...GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada."

Thanks for the heads up. Got my free copy of AVP. I already had it on Steam but wanted a DRM free copy of it.

Er.. Auto-patching games is precisely a feature of GOG Galaxy.

GoG is getting more and more interesting.

An important piece of news is that they are going to document the Galaxy protocol and they are supportive of community alternative open clients. See in the video at 49:40: http://www.gog.com/news/ask_us_anything_on_twitch

The irony of GOG having a givaway promoting a linux compatible client but not having AvP for linux when the source code is available on Github.

I'm not familiar with that game. Was the engine open sourced?

From what I understand AvP has its source on Github, so it's entirely possible they're planning to do it but that's really wishful thinking. I've always loved this game, so I hope we can get a native client rather than a wine wrapper or just running it through wine.

Like user sonic said, unfortunately not. However some games are activate-able on GOG when they have been purchased on Steam earlier like The Witcher1/2.

To each their own. I don't like feeling as if I don't really own a game which is why I prefer GOG over Steam.
