After collecting more than twice of their goal on Kickstarter in 2012, the retro action platformer was released for Windows in September last year but is now available for Linux for the first time in an open beta on Steam.

Volgarr was 1 of 10 nominees for Destructoid's best platformer of 2013 and though it lost the election to Super Mario 3D World it made a good impression on their reviewer:
It also ranked fifth in the community poll, which is not at all bad considering the competition from console hits such as the mentioned Wii U exclusive, Rayman Legends and Tearaway. Readers pitched it just behind the indie hit Guacamelee! and ahead of a mix of notable indie and AAA platformers.
On Friday the developer announced the Mac and Linux beta on Steam and are looking for feedback from owners of the game. The game is built on an in-house engine and responses from Linux users in the thread so far indicates that it works great:

QuoteLike a drill sergeant, Volgarr the Viking is here to yank us out of our comfort zone and put us through hell unending. If you survive, you'll feel like the biggest badass of all time.

QuoteSeems to be a great port so far, thanks! 360 controller works perfectly.
QuoteI'm on Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit and its working great for me so far!
QuotePlays flawlessly so far on my setup running Fedora 20 64-bit with GNOME.
QuoteI've had no issues (besides me being clumsy with the keyboard controls) on Debian Testing.
QuoteI've only had two issues yet, and neither are game braking. Very playable on linux!
QuoteWorking perfectly on my opensuse 13.1 64bits machine with a Nvidia 430 card.

I bought it after I saw this article. Holy ballmonkeys, it's brutal. Make progress -> die. Make more progress -> die. Feels a lot like Demon's Souls (and to a lesser extent, Dark Souls).
The first two levels each took me roughly an hour. I've made it halfway through the third level, but haven't gotten to the boss yet.

I think I'm going to pick this up, looks a fun game for sitting on the couch and playing. I was also sold by the news announcement I just saw for it being released on Linux a while back.
I like the idea of Vikings powered by Linux.
