The 0 A.D. team have been extremely busy as always to bring us the latest and greatest in open source RTS gaming.
First of all they really need programmers to join in and help, and considering how amazing the project already is I hope others pitch in and help. Go to this thread on their forum to see how to join them.
As for progress, they have been hard at working on their meshes and armature to bring them up to more modern standards. The AI bot is becoming increasingly smart, and now supports saved games!
Their use of the "SpiderMonkey" software has been updated, so it brings with it general performance increases in many areas. That is one of the most common complaints about 0 A.D., so it's good they are working on it.
Lots of new animal models have been made like sharks and tunafish; who doesn't love tuna?
Masses of bug fixes of course.
See their full rundown here. Looks like Alpha 18 is going to be quite something.

0 A.D. has got to be one of the only free software game projects in history where getting art is not a problem but getting coders is.

Gads, but I wish I could help with programming. Perhaps manual writing...

Recently I started to make tiny contributions to VCMI because game is almost playable (most of things except proper AI is here), but there a lot things that can be fixed or implemented even with limited programming skill. If there any Heroes 3 fans want to join it's good time to do so. ;-)
OpenMW also permanently need programmers. Especially their launcher and lack of needed features and editor too.

About 0 A.D. i'm really hope this update improve their simulation performance at least for a bit. Too bad it's not something I can help with. :'(

I keep thinking with 0AD and SuperTuxKart that they should put it on digital distribution platforms and charge money. Obviously offering a free (gratis) option on their website, but I don't think there's anything lost from offering the exact same thing for money so long as the free option is there. They could hire a programmer with that.
I would pay just for the convenience of running it through Steam and having a tidy game library, I'm sure quite a few other people would and would also bring the games to the attention of people outside the FOSS community.

Basically they don't want to put unfinished game here.

They should just use "Early Access" where it is fully allowed to take years to reach a finished state.
hmm I might look into helping them with some code.

Oh, certainly, but that was not exactly my point; most free software game projects have a lot of trouble getting art assets, while 0 A.D. is drowning in them while always needing more code.

True. 0 A.D always was my favorite open source game from visual point of view.
Though let's say fair their project not just need "programmers", but need one high-skilled programmer who can spend few month full time on tweaking of simulation performance.
I just tried to play properly with last 3-4 releases and game always was pretty stable with some features missing, but it's still would be playable if performance will be better. Considering I have high-end Intel CPUs situation for everyone else likely a lot worse than what I seen...

If they could get the game to use multiple cores, that would be a huge improvement. In college at the moment, doing compsci, might throw myself into some 0AD code at some point in the holidays. I've done a few small things with it before. But I'm afraid I'm really much too inexperienced to be of any real help for the time being.
