This is excellent news. Defenders Quest is a fantastic game that was spoilt by the use of Adobe Air, but no more!

Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten is a great mix of RPG and Tower Defence that is being upgraded as "DQ1HD" to feature better graphics and it will use the Haxe language, so no more need for Adobe Air!

The developer tweeted to us to let us know:

@gamingonlinux You'll be happy to know the DQ1HD upgrade will be 100% Haxe, (ie native C++ binary) for maximum Linux.

Set Linux levels to maximum number one!

Official About
Defender's Quest is a Tower-Defense/RPG Hybrid (Think Final Fantasy Tactics meets Tower Defense).

Defender's Quest tightly focuses on three things: tactical depth, customization, and story. That means no random encounters, no spikey-haired emo kids, no forced time sinks, and no tedious, repetitive battles.

The battle system builds off of tower defense, with individual characters taking the place of towers. Each character levels-up, learns skills, and equips gear individually, allowing the player to customize their battle experience and strategy. The overall game structure is similar to "tactical" RPG's, but with a real-time battle system. Game speed is adjustable, and commands can even be issued while the game is paused.

No Air? It's about time that games stopped using something that Adobe abandoned quite some time ago.

I may start playing it again. Imagine!

Nice! Now if we can get Anodyne to run without the accursed Air, I'll be happy.

Not just a rewrite to get rid of Air, but also an update to HD sprites and some writing. Full changes listed:

Azra's Journal will be moved to the regular game
A "behind the scenes" developer Journal will be added to NewGame+
Hero Mode will become an explicitly supported game mode
We'll do a much better job of explaining NewGame+ when you beat the regular game
James (our writer) will sprinkle some other additional story material throughout (no new cutscenes though)
The awkward "Bulldog" targetting mode will be replaced with "Target specific enemy"
We're trying to make the DQ2 engine fully deterministic and compatibile with replay files. If we achieve that, we'll ship it with DQ1HD.
We'll include any random engine upgrdes intended for DQ2 that are compatible with/useful for DQ1

Great news - a great TD game with RPG elements nicely integrated. I only ever got a few hours into it, but I think I'll be revisiting on the back of this news.

I'm really happy about this news too, and hope more developers will follow suit. However in the mean time, it shouldn't be very hard to get most Adobe AIR apps to work with adl. The Arch Linux wiki has a guide on this:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Adobe_air

Of course game developers should treat Linux users as first-class citizens too, but we have many knowledgeable users, and I hope more of them could try to improve the installation of Adobe AIR applications on their distros.

Grrrr.:><: I just now downloaded PQ on my laptop and it (wait for it) installed AIR:><:.

Perhaps GOL was misinformed? At least (this time) AIR installed without complaining that gnome-keyring wasn't installed...thanks for small favors...

(Bolding mine)

I.e. DQ1HD is not yet out, but will be in the near future.
